The organisers also asked if I would give a talk at Cardiff University the following day; I happily agreed to both proposals. Yesterday, I got call from Ghaith Jayousi, who had invited me to Cardiff, to inform me that his University had refused to host the event, due to “security concerns coming from higher channels”. “Most room bookings for public events at Cardiff University usually take 24 hours to be confirmed,” Ghaith told me. “We submitted a room booking request for your talk on March 13th, in Cardiff University Main Building, Large Shandon Theatre. The response was delayed for a few weeks before we were told that the University would not host the event. Apparently, the problems do not end there. The occupation of the University of Sheffield is a peaceful and non-violent protest – we stand in solidarity with the trade unions and the millions of public sector workers who went on strike today in protest against the decimation of their pensions, and against the austerity agenda of the ConDem government.

Sheffield Occupation

We believe that the trade union movement must link up with workers in the private sector in order to defeat all cuts: we call on the TUC to set dates for further strike action as soon as possible in 2012. We do not seek to disrupt lectures! We call upon all lecturers and students to continue to go to their lectures as normal, regardless of other arrangement made by University authorities, since our presence seeks to facilitate education and engagement with students.

Students and workers share a common cause – we are both having our futures denied to us. Therefore, Sheffield Occupation demand: · We demand that the Universities make all rooms fully accessible. Cambridge blames government cuts as it charges maximum £9,000 fees

Photograph: Geoffrey Robinson/Rex Features It is the world's top university whose alumni include Nick Clegg. And now the Liberal Democrats' U-turn on tuition fees has paved the way for Cambridge University to charge £9,000 a year. This morning we learnt that Clegg's alma mater has grabbed this opportunity. An internal university document is unequivocal: The level of tuition fee charged from 2012 entry should be the maximum permissible, i.e. £9,000 pa with any subsequent adjustment for inflationary increases.

That raw headline will be a nuisance for Clegg and Vince Cable, another Cambridge graduate, who introduced the rise in tuition fees last year. Cambridge is doing this in two ways: • The £9,000 fees will be reduced to £6,000 for all students whose parents earn less than £25,000 a year. • A bursary of £1,625 will be offered to students whose parents earn less than £25,000 a year. Leeds: What is the ROU? « Really Open University

Instigated by students and staff of higher education institutions in the city of Leeds (UK), the ROU is non-hierarchical and open to anyone who wishes to see an end to the commodifcation of knowledge and the creation of a free and empowering education system where creative and critical thought is fostered. Background Universities have traditionally been elite institutions benefiting a privileged minority. Their (anti)social role has been to reproduce the elite of society, enclosing knowledge in the minds of the few and cementing a small ruling class.

Lecturers and support staff in universities across the UK are in an industrial dispute with employers over a pay offer that they claim represents a real-terms cut of 13% over five years and will be walking out tomorrow (Tuesday). Kirsty Haigh, Edinburgh University Students’ Association’s Vice-President and one of the students currently in the occupation, explained why they were there. “Edinburgh University – and the university sector generally – has plenty of money. We see this every day with millions going on vanity projects and senior managers pay. We are calling on the University to see sense and give staff the pay they deserve.” “University staff have had a real term pay cut of 13% and this is not acceptable. UWE's Camp for Education. Young fees protesters in Brighton 'mistreated' by police

Police officers are alleged to have used batons and riot shields to strike the mainly peaceful protesters, many of whom were aged under 16. The accusation is levelled by three academics who have extensively studied the police's handling of two demonstrations in Brighton in November. Police deny that their tactics were heavy handed and said the researchers did not give them a chance to contribute to the study.

The academics recorded instances of protesters "being struck with hands, batons, and shields, being kicked, pushed to the ground, thrown, placed in headlocks, threatened by dogs … yet there are no recorded incidents of protesters harming or threatening members of the public, or other protesters".
