A growing culture of reform has turned the campus quad away from preparing students for citizenship -- that combination of “intelligence plus character” the Reverend Dr. Here’s a look at some disturbing changes taking place on campuses across the country. 1.

Geachte mevrouw Oudeman, Beste Marjan, U bent een ‘topvrouw uit het internationale bedrijfsleven’ en de nieuwe collegevoorzitster van de Universiteit Utrecht. Geprezen door de Wall Street Journal en een van de meest invloedrijke vrouwen die Nederland kent. Wie zijn wij, de studenten? We weten zelf ook dat een Universiteit inmiddels, net als een koekjesfabriek, in een markt opereert. U beseft ongetwijfeld ook dat veel studenten anders denken over het doel van een Universiteit. Verschillende ideeën kunnen soms botsen, wat u vermoedelijk ook is verteld door uw voorganger Yvonne van Rooy wiens kantoor ooit drie dagen werd bezet door studenten die vonden dat er medezeggenschap ontbrak.
We zijn erg benieuwd welke hervormingen er komen onder uw gezag. The tarnished reputation of university research. Weg met de mythes over wetenschap | Opinie. Waardenvrije wetenschap bestaat niet, schrijft Geneeskundedecaan Frank Miedema in een open brief aan Hans Clevers, de nieuwe president van de KNAW. Beste Hans, Professor Robbert Dijkgraaf heeft bij zijn afscheid als president van de KNAW weer gepleit voor meer fundamenteel onderzoek. Hij schaart zich daarmee in het koor van de advocaten van de pure wetenschap, zoals Ad Lagendijk en Piet Borst die recent weer hun beklag deden over het verkwanselen van de pure waardenvrije wetenschap en het onbegrip bij politiek en publiek voor wetenschap. Dat is old school, hameren op het aambeeld van onstuurbaar fundamenteel onderzoek, waarvoor men in blind vertrouwen het publieke geld moet geven; want dan 'komt het uiteindelijk wel goed met de innovatie'.
Dijkgraaf heeft er geen cent extra door losgekregen. Dijkgraaf heeft als echte bèta en topwetenschapper en vooral als wetenschappelijke side kick in DWDD hele goede dingen voor de wetenschap gedaan. Dan moet er echter wel iemand voor betalen, de vraag is wie. In 1987 ging het ook niet zo best met de economie en had de universiteit – destijds nog KUN genoemd – geld nodig.

Gezien de identiteitscrisis waar de universiteit zich in bevond, leek dat een erg goed idee. Het zou de moeite waard zijn om met een aantal mensen, links en rechts uit de universiteit, en bestuurders en deskundigen uit den lande, te gaan praten over welke kant onze organisatie op zou moeten om te blijven passen in een snel veranderende samenleving.
Waar staan we als universiteit voor? Hoe komen we aan ons geld? Ik weet nog dat je enthousiast was over het idee en mee wilde denken over wie we zouden vragen om daar verhelderende en sprankelende ideeën over te geven. Naïef gingen we ten onder in door ons ontketende krachten, zonder te begrijpen waar die waanzinnige onwil en weerzin vandaan kwam. Huiskamerdebat: Van wie is de universiteit? Van wie is de universiteit nu eigenlijk? Van topbestuurders en raden van toezicht, of van studenten, docenten en onderzoekers? Dit vroeg historicus Jan Luiten van Zanden zich afgelopen voorjaar af in een column in het Utrechts Universiteitsblad. En geograaf Ton van Rietbergen stelde in Dagblad Trouw op 6 september vast dat er van de inspraakcultuur op de universiteiten niets meer over is: de colleges van bestuur hebben de zaak naar hun hand gezet.
Het gaat weliswaar goed met de Universiteit Utrecht, maar de vraag is of de huidige zakelijke koers niet ten koste gaat van de menselijke maat. Genoeg stof voor een stevig huiskamerdebat. De taboe om mensen aan te spreken op integriteit moet worden doorbroken Den Haag, 14 mei 2012 – Nederlanders vinden het moeilijk om een ander aan te spreken op integriteit.
Dit constateert het rapport van Transparency International Nederland (TI-NL) over het Nederlandse Integriteitssysteem (NIS) dat vandaag gepresenteerd is tijdens een persconferentie in Nieuwspoort. Achtergrond onderzoek De belangrijkste bestuurlijke en maatschappelijk instellingen en organisaties, die een rol spelen in de bevordering van integriteit of juist corruptie bestrijden, zijn het afgelopen jaar door de onderzoekster in opdracht van Transparency bekeken en beoordeeld.
Het onderzoek liep parallel met onderzoek in vierentwintig andere Europese staten en werd grotendeels gefinancierd door de Europese Commissie. Risk of corruption in the Netherlands is increasing.
The Netherlands are becoming increasingly vulnerable to corruption, the organisation of Transparency International states in a report regarding the Dutch Integrity system that was presented Monday morning. The research group of Corruption and Integrity of the Saxion's Governance lectureship carried out the study.
Chief researcher Willeke Slingerland during the presentation of the report in Nieuwspoort in The Hague. The study shows that the basis in The Netherlands is strong, but also that there are a number of points of attention. “For example, there is no code of conduct for the (Dutch) Lower House”, says chief researcher Willeke Slingerland. “Neither is there transparancy in the Netherlands about which judge is assigned a certain case. Integrity is an important theme at the Academy of Administration and Law, where Slingerland teaches.

“Hoeveel bewijs verlangt u nog?” , vroeg Robbert Dijkgraaf. Volgens Gerdien de Jong hebben politici geen interesse voor de werkelijke waarde van wetenschap. De NRC publiceerde op dinsdag 5 juni een weergave van de slotrede van Robbert Dijkgraaf als president van de KNAW. Dijkgraaf betoogde dat vrij en onbelemmerd fundamenteel onderzoek noodzakelijk is. Gezien de politieke borden voor de kop, benadrukte Dijkgraaf dat vrij en onbelemmerd fundamenteel onderzoek noodzakelijk is voor innovatie en economische groei. Nederland wil bij de eerste vijf in de Global Competitive Index horen. Volgens de NRC heeft Dijkgraaf gezegd: “Het is zuur te constateren dat de landen die we de afgelopen jaren zo vaak ten voorbeeld hebben gesteld vanwege hun inspirerende kennisbeleid – Zweden, Denemarken, Finland en met name Duitsland – niet alleen sterker uit de financiële crisis van 2008 zijn gekomen, maar zich ook in de huidige eurocrisis positief weten te onderscheiden.

WASHINGTON – For decades, the American Association of University Professors’ Committee A has been in the forefront of investigating potential violations of academic freedom, often recommending institutions for censure. The committee's reports offer detailed histories of cases and the reasons the AAUP believes faculty rights have been violated. But some speakers at a session at the association’s annual conference here suggested Wednesday that state conferences of the organization should be allowed to do similar work because the national committee is stretched too thin and does not have enough resources.
The suggestion seems to have come at a favorable moment for advocates of this shift, when new leadership among the nationally elected members of the organization is seeking ways to make the AAUP more effective and relevant to faculty members at the local level and focus more resources on the collective bargaining role of the organization. Another speaker at the session, John K. Fresh appreciation: valuing culture without recourse to pounds and pence. A new £2 million research council programme that aims to identify the non-economic benefits of culture could help to protect government funding for it in the future.
This is the view of Geoffrey Crossick, outgoing vice-chancellor of the University of London, who will direct the two-year Cultural Value programme, launched on 19 July by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The initiative will fund projects that attempt to "conceptualise, identify and provide evidence" of the benefits of arts and cultural activity in non-economic terms. As a secondary aim, the projects will also examine the role of university education and research in underpinning such benefits. Rick Rylance, chief executive of the AHRC, said: "While we might feel we instinctively understand the value of culture...defining and expressing that value is surprisingly difficult, let alone the challenge of persuading others of its importance.
