Unilever

Geschiedenis[bewerken] Unilever's Latest Packaging Tech. Guardian News and Media (GNM) today officially launches Guardian Labs - its branded content and innovation agency - which offers brands bold and compelling new ways to tell their stories and engage with influential Guardian audiences. The Guardian Now Shares “Values” With Unilever. Much of the media isn’t covering the grotesque transformation of journalism into corporate public relations – well, they’re all in on it, aren’t they? – but the latest example is really rich. The Guardian – that lefty, anti-corporate, “comment-is-free” trans-Atlantic behemoth – is now merging with Unilever to produce “content”. What does that mean exactly? Is the Guardian helping a food giant greenwash its image? Dove's 'real beauty sketches' ad deserves some praise. If you haven't seen it already, it's worth the three minutes of your life to watch Dove's new ad, if only because it has sparked such a wide range of reactions. Some women wept at the end of it, immediately sending it to friends with "you must watch this" notes; others have gotten downright angry about it. Let's start with the obvious: it's an ad, not a film festival documentary. It's been edited heavily and has overly melodramatic music. Who is the government's health deal with big business really good for? It was on a Friday afternoon in May 2009 when Andrew Lansley's Public Health Commission met, as usual, in the newly restored 1930s splendour of Unilever House on Victoria Embankment in London. It was gathering for its final plenary session, having been tasked by Lansley, now health secretary but then in opposition, to come up with new policies for the Conservatives to tackle the big public health crises of obesity, diet-related disease, and alcohol abuse. Obesity has trebled in the last 20 years, diet-related disease is estimated to cost the health service £6bn a year and rising, alcohol misuse £2.7bn a year, and the effects of lack of exercise a further £1.8bn a year.

Nearly a quarter of all adults and one in seven of children in England are now obese. Alcohol deaths have doubled in the last 15 years, reflecting a doubling of alcohol consumption per capita over the last 40 years. It must have felt like a new dawn for the food and drinks industries. Loved to Death. By embracing their critics and colonising governments, corporations engineer a world of conformity and consumerism. By George Monbiot, published in the Guardian 8th April 2014 How do you engineer a bland, depoliticised world, a consensus built around consumption and endless growth, a dreamworld of materialism and debt and atomisation, in which all relations can be prefixed with a dollar sign, in which we cease to fight for change? You delegate your powers to companies whose profits depend on this model. Power is shifting: to places in which we have no voice or vote.

Domestic policies are forged by special advisers and spin doctors, by panels and advisory committees stuffed with lobbyists. To me, the giant consumer goods company Unilever, with which I clashed over the issue of palm oil a few days ago(1), symbolises these shifting relationships. It seems to have representation almost everywhere. Sometimes Unilever uses this power well. Guerillas target Dove on the underground. Sustainable Palm oil production.
