Centres of excellence attract scholars from all over the world. Accordingly, a considerable number of Dutch scholars and students have settled down in the American northeast, home to the most prestigious cluster of academic institutions worldwide. The Dutch presence at this very pinnacle of science is a source of pride. As a potential resource, it has, until now, been insufficiently appreciated. We would like to thank all attendees for their participation in the Boston Seminar. Seminar The Boston Seminar is a unique opportunity for Dutch academics in the USA and leading policy makers and academics in the Netherlands to exchange views and experiences on Dutch and American higher education models and related topics.

Accordingly, a considerable number of Dutch scholars have settled down in the American northeast, home to the most prestigious academic institutions in the world. The Dutch presence at this very pinnacle of science is a source of pride. As a potential resource, it has been insufficiently appreciated until now. The Boston Seminar aims to help and correct this. Secondly, the Seminar will provide academic expats with a podium, which allows them to share their experiences in the US and their thoughts on future avenues for Dutch academia. Thirdly, we aim to consolidate the network built up for the Seminar into a permanent platform. We hope to welcome two groups of participants in particular, although others are welcome as well. Harvard-promovendus Jonathan Mijs was erbij. In deel 1 van zijn verslag vertelt hij over de aantrekkingskracht van de VS, zijn eigen ervaring als ‘visiting student’ en de lessen die hij daaruit heeft getrokken voor zichzelf en de Nederlandse instellingen. This Saturday concluded a well-organized, informative and above-all engaging two-day conference initiated by the New York consulate and attended by a diverse group of executives, scholars, politicians and government officials. Dat is niet vreemd aangezien achterliggende doelen en dimensies zelden worden vermeld. Eén opmerkelijke prestatie van Nederland bleef in Harvard zo onderbelicht. At the end of the first day of the conference, moderator Jorrit de Jong (Lecturer, Harvard Kennedy School) made a brave attempt to channel the plenary discussion towards clear and concise statements.

The participants of course were much too stubborn to comply ("I am a university president. De Jong's request was informed perhaps by the many, often contradicting, appraisals and critiques of American and Dutch education based on anecdotal evidence.
