We decided to share the patterns as we write the patterns and the book to get community feedback. In maps and network diagrams, the available display space is often smaller than the area populated with data items - a design problem that you will face at the latest when applying zoom functionality to your interface. If the user can’t see the whole display within one single view, let him move the data space around the display. This can be achieved by providing a set of directional buttons, or by letting the user shove the data space around via drag and drop.
