I want to talk today about something that you may not expect from a conference like this, because it will not be very technical, it will not be very scientific to a certain extent. It will be hopefully more like opening minds. And maybe also, give us a little different direction. Now, I want to talk particularly also about things that are entrepreneurially related. So when Christian said I'm a scientist, that's actually not quite true. And so things I like to do is actually coming up with ideas that are somehow usable for a spin out at the end of a day. First of all, I don't hate science and I don't hate basic science.
Second thing is I really like to do research activities that do have a clear, defined goal. So more than that, I like if we talk about creating solutions that have a democratization effect. So I talked about-- a little bit, which I want to talk about definitions. I don't want to make fun of incremental innovation.

Many of the metrics that are used to evaluate companies are reasonably well understood and publicly known. But few people realize how VC funds are measured — and how easy it is to find benchmarks and specific performance of individual funds. If a VC fund has been fully invested and all proceeds have been returned to Limited Partners, these metrics are pretty straightforward. You can look at the overall multiple of invested capital and calculate the actual IRR of a limited partner’s cash flow and then benchmark it against other funds and other asset classes over a similar period. But it takes a very long time to determine the full performance of a VC fund, usually more than 10 years. Here’s how investors track VC performance before funds are fully realized. Even though these are intermediate figures, VC performance at a high level tends to be measured through three metrics: TVPI, DPI, and IRR. But in the long run, DPI is king.
