Cuomo bans fracking in NY and questions climate science all in one day. It was a long time coming, but, finally, New York Gov.
Andrew Cuomo (D) announced Wednesday afternoon that he will ban hydraulic fracturing in the state. It’s a major win for fracking opponents. Approximately 40 percent of New York state sits over the Marcellus Shale natural gas formation, which, thanks to the development of high-volume hydrofracking (HVHF) or fracking technology, would now be easily accessible to drillers — if they could get the OK from the state. The Upstate region where the natural gas is found, known as the Southern Tier, is New York’s most economically depressed area. Fracking is already widespread in neighboring Pennsylvania, as are the ensuing environmental, health, and safety problems. New York has had a fracking moratorium in place since Cuomo’s predecessor David Paterson (D) issued one in 2008. It seemed possible in the wake of the primary that Cuomo would try to mollify his liberal critics by banning fracking.
But as for climate change … New York Assembly Overwhelmingly Passes Fracking Moratorium. New York’s general assembly passed a moratorium on fracking Monday with a sensible question in mind—why rush?
“We have heard from thousands of residents across the state about many issues associated with hydrofracking, and prudent leadership demands that we take our time to address all these concerns,” said New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. “We do not need to rush into this. The natural gas deposits within the Marcellus Shale are not going to go anywhere.” The assembly passed a three-year moratorium of oil and natural gas drilling permits by an 89-to-34 count to allow for more time to study the environmental impact of the practice. The state has been under a fracking moratorium since 2008, with the most recent one passing in 2013.
Full passage of the moratorium now depends on the New York State Senate and, ultimately, Gov. Dr. Bankrupt fracking firm suing New York governor to end moratorium. Norse Energy is a failure when it comes to its core business — drilling for gas and oil.
Despite America’s huge drilling boom, the company is bankrupt. Unable to turn a profit as a driller, the company has taken to suing governments and officials that limit fracking, blaming them for its undoing. Attorneys for the company’s trustees filed a lawsuit Tuesday against New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and two state commissioners, claiming that the state’s fracking moratorium had brought about the company’s undoing.
The Press & Sun-Bulletin reports: The suit asks the court to force the Cuomo administration to finalize a study that will determine whether large-scale fracking — a controversial technique to help extract gas from shale formations — can proceed in New York, arguing that repeated delays in the state’s decision-making process are grounds for a judge to intervene. And here are more details from Rigzone: Lives have been ruined by not fracking?
FRACKING NY STATE: Daily Cloudt. Canaries in a fracking well. I Frack NY? 'No reason' to ban fracking?? Fracking explosion in PA. Fracking explosion in PA. Submit your fracking comments.
