The final model consists of a repitition of the same component N number of times. The research was initiated with the modeling of the 3D basic component that can be obtatined from the 2D patterns. In the initial experiments, cardboard was used as the main element as it was flexible enough and easy to use.

Not yet on the market, Moroso's newest collection of seating, pouffes and rugs is named the Sushi Collection. This special combination of different elements is indeed the key characteristic of this collection, which unites simple, clean lines with exquisite patchwork embroidery, evocative of Japanese or Moroccan moods, and embroidered, ultra-modern geometric patterns. Above: Dutch designer Edward van Vliet Edward van Vliet is a Dutch interior designer who started off as a fabric designer before moving into interior design and large-scale furnishing projects, including Derlon Hotel and NL Hotel in Amsterdam. He worked with Patrizia Moroso on this collection (shown above).

digital fabrication – a pipe « workshops factory

“A pipe”, praca wykonana w ramach zajec Digital Fabrication w Iaac pod kierownictwem Marty Male-Alemany, prezentuje mozliwosci jakie otwiera modelowanie 3D polaczone bezposrednio z technologia wycinania. Nasz wycinek jest czescia wiekszej instalacji na ktora skladaja sie rozne projekty polaczone w jedna calosc ( jak na zdjeciu ). Wszystkie elementy modelowane byly w Rhino a nastepnie skladane w calosc. Ponizej widac cala instalacje oraz nasza czesc : proces skladania, finalny projekt i pliki gotowe do wyciecia:

Digital Fabrication : *CARMEN MCKEE BUSHONG

http://www.carmenmbushong.com/index.php?/images/digital-fabrication/ Project Objective: This course addressed the recent digital technological advances in design, fabrication, and material science and the unprecedented opportunities they have created for architectural design and production practices. It investigated the implications of the new digital design and fabrication processes enabled by the use of computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and rapid prototyping (RP) technologies. This course also addressed the development of repetitive non-standardized building systems through digitally controlled variation and mass customization.
http://maciekburdalski.wordpress.com/tag/digital-fabrication/ Project tries to push forward the conception of personal fabbers, as a CNC machines that could be customized. It investigates to which extend architect could have control over fabrication of projects designed with digital tools, and how much technology of fabrication affects design. Very important aspect in this work is a idea of open source design of hardware.

http://blogs.cornell.edu/adaptivesystems/project_voronication/ VORONOICATION /Vibro-Wind Harvesting System This component strategy takes advantage of a mathematical algorithm, the Voronoi , which has inherent structural integrity as well as the opportunity for creating great variation in cell size. By thickening the structure and producing a varying taper within each cell, the goal was to control variable wind funneling effect through the resulting membrane. Parametric Design & Digital Fabrication | aurelVR architecture

The graphic series form the core part of the design education at sophomore level at the KSA. The series is intended to introduce specific design tools and to complement design studio. This seminar introduces strategies of parametric design and methods of digital fabrication through the means of scripting and editing. Standing at the merger of a generative computational design approach, parametric design and digital fabrication are two faces of the same medal. While recent advances in coding and scripting empower architects to write their own software, digital fabrication seamlessly communicates these designs to machines and robots.

Axel Kilian « Scriptedbypurpose

http://scriptedbypurpose.wordpress.com/participants/axel-kilian/ Axel Kilian recently completed a PhD and subsequent Post Doctoral position in the Computation Group in the Department of Architecture at MIT. He came to MIT on a Fulbright scholarship after completing his professional architecture degree at the University of the Arts in Berlin, Germany. During his stay he also completed his Master of Science in Architectural Studies at MIT. His PhD research centered on design exploration in the context of architecture and design processes using computational processes, namely programming and parametric design in combination with fabrication. Recent projects range from architectural form finding applications, collaboration on concept car designs with the media lab, to a number of full scale installations. Axel Kilian has been teaching courses and workshops in computation in academia and in collaboration with the smart geometry group in the UK since 2003.
Since one of the 4 research facets of this thesis– and really, the most significant angle of theoretical and technical innovation – is “4D Design: Spatial, Material and Constructional drawing”, it is critical here to clarify what is meant by the 4-dimensional drawing. The 4-dimensional drawing is embedded within the act of construction itself, and is an integral principle of the way in which a masonry structure (as opposed to any other type of construction) is built by craftsmen. Now, all sorts of constructional methods involve a registration of sorts so that building components ‘line up’ in their fully assembled state.

Surface Design Show 2012 - Future Thinking

Future Thinking will highlight the thinking that goes into the development and selection of materials for architecture and design. It is a new area for Surface Design Show bringing to London designers and architects with new products, materials and prototypes.

I would propose the course to extend the field of interest towards rapid prototyping techniques in question of maintenance (in terms of usage as a facade element). But I like the small spy story in your "gallery" visualization!

denCity is a Masters level research project by Sahra (Peter Sovinc, Saif Almasri, Suryansh Chandra) at the Design Research Lab, Architectural Association, London. denCity is a critique of modern day urbanization and city planning methodologies that are based on 20-year masterplans of linear city growth and are incapable of dealing with the pace of change of modern economic landscapes, societal conditions and life styles. It researches new interactive systems of master planning and urban design, that are capable of coping with completely different economic scenarios within a matter of seconds, producing relevant FAR and height regulation maps, programmatic distribution information and street networks.
