Columbus, Ohio demonstrations for Egypt

On Friday the 28th, demonstrators around the USA are showing their support for the Egyptian Revolution of January 25, 2011. Here, in Columbus, Ohio, in front of the Wexner Center for the Arts, it is no different. People from all around the world, whether locals from the USA, the Middle East or elsewhere, showed their support by picking up signs and stating their minds. Egyptian transfer student Maher Elsayed exclaims, “I’m happy with what is going on in Egypt! Even I cannot be there, I still want to do my part; even if it is this little.” The founder of the Facebook event Imaan Hossam that started the demonstration in Columbus says, “There is no organization behind the event, just private individuals who sincerely wish to support the brave men and women of Egypt who are risking their lives to end tyranny.

This is not the first demonstration of support from the Ohio State area. Ghorab - Protest at Gzia on 28/1 - TwitVid. Major Muslim TV preacher Amr Khaled heads for Cairo.

Egypt supporters rally worldwide - Europe

In Turkey between 200 and 400 protesters held a demonstration outside the Fatih Mosque in central Istanbul after Friday prayers to lend their voices to the Egyptian cause. Anita McNaught, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Turkey, said the mosque had become a focal point for activism since Israeli commandos raided a Turkish ship headed to Gaza last year. "It is very much the organisations that we saw rise to prominence following the Israeli attack on the Mavi Marmara that have taken on the streets today to lend their voices in solidarity with the Egyptians," she said.

A simultaneous rally of about 50 people was also held in Ankara, the Turkish capital, where up to 50 people gathered outside the Egyptian embassy. Tunisian solidarity Abdullah Ali, a 26-year-old demonstrator at the rally in London, told Al Jazeera they were asking for "free democratic elections". What that means is that people should remain at home, there shouldn't be any gatherings and police should be in-charge of the street. Instead, the police are missing and people are swarming through the capital Cairo. The situation is made worse by opportunistic looters. Several people in Egypt are reporting that shopkeepers are gathering relatives and friends to protect their businesses from looters in isolated areas of the city.
