More white people now than ever, perhaps, are talking about and interested in racial justice in the U.S.

Got Internalized White Superiority? The Danger of Denial and the Promise of Another Way

We are visiting the Equal Justice Initiative’s lynching memorial and museum in Montgomery, Alabama; we are reading Robin DiAngelo’s White Fragility; we are “woke.” And yet, in my work as a racial justice educator, I see white leaders of nonprofits, businesses, health and education departments struggling the most to look inward when it comes to race. Perhaps it’s easier to own the privileges we experience as white people because those are about how we are treated by systems and by other people. But to be open to seeing the ways in which the way I lead, the programs I have developed, and the relationships I have with people of color may be tinted by my own racial biases; this is where I see a lot of resistance from white people.

Sep 15, 2020 2020-09-15 Digital Learning • Learning Support The US National Parks are the embodiment of a concept emerging from 19th-century democratic ideas to preserve the magnificent natural wonders of the land, making them available in perpetuity.

Virtual Exploration of US National Parks

The conservation movement prioritized the protection of land for the purposes of education, enjoyment, and inspiration, and as an escape from urban industrialization, pollution, and overcrowding. Other objectives emerged to prevent the depletion of natural resources, to preserve flora and fauna, and to protect native peoples from permanent destruction. Studying the national parks helps to illuminate these ideas and illustrate dimensions of US politics, economics, and society that resonate today. . * Brief History of the National Parks. 9-12th Grade Sustainable Energy WebQuest. 4 Black Philosophers to Teach Year-Round. 4 Black Philosophers to Teach Year-Round

Eventually, Bright decided that anything over four was big and anything below four was not. When his mom asked him, “What about four?” He started crying. “If you think kids aren’t asking big questions about why things are the way they are, what’s fair and what’s not fair, why things should be this way and not that way—it’s just not true. Kids wonder about these things,” said Bright, now a philosophy professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science, whose interest in asking questions with no easy answers helped pull him into the field. Now Is the Time to Redefine Learning — Not Recreate Traditional School Online

But in a difficult year, where charting the unknown has become a daily occurrence, it’s a tough argument for a school to make. We’ve never done things this way—meaning it may be the perfect opportunity to do them differently. In our work with schools and districts from across diverse geographies and demographics, the Institute for Teaching and Leading has seen first-hand the incredible hard work of leadership teams and educators to adjust to this new and ever-changing landscape. Our organization works with schools and districts across the country to create more student-centered learning experiences, which gives us a unique view to the changes that are, and are not, happening at scale.

While the possibilities for flexible, innovative learning models are myriad, stories from across the country make it clear that as a nation, we are largely missing this opportunity. We all brushed up on our understanding of synchronous and asynchronous learning. As teachers innovated, we learned about what works best in asynchronous situations, including interactive videos of teachers modeling and thinking aloud as well as getting students to read and practice what they have been taught. Essentially, asynchronous was used for review and preview and helped the learning take hold. We also learned that it was important, although difficult, to provide opportunities for students to collaborate with peers during synchronous learning sessions. But the world is changing again. About the National Standards of Practice (NSOP) High school career academies date back to 1969 and have been a growing presence in the country for the last quarter century, especially in the states that have provided grants for them (i.e., CA, FL, AR) and the many cities and districts that have embraced the approach. There are an estimated 7,000 career academies in operation, enrolling about one million students.
