Google has announced a new program for nonprofits, which they say will include a grant for adwords, exclusive tools, and collaboration forums. "Instead of applying to each Google product individually," nonprofits can apply for a suite of tools here, according to Google's blog post. The user-friendly site, Google.com/nonprofits, looks like it aims to simplify and educate how nonprofits can use the wide array of google products for their organization (like this video below). For now, it wasn't immediately obvious what new or "exclusive" tools will be offered to nonprofits, how google would determine the grant size for adwords, or who is (and is not) qualified. Something was missing for me. Having worked a long time managing and designing non profit programs, I know that our sector is well versed in demonstrating results to funders by employing metrics to capture outputs. Often (not always) these metrics are driven more by the funder than the organization. That said, It’s quite a challenge for non profit leaders to take the plunge and implement a social media strategy. This is where Olivier Blanchard from The Brandbuilder Inc. comes in. In partnership with KRC Research, our team conducted a survey of 200 nonprofit and foundation executives to explore how their organizations are using social media and the value they derive from these efforts. Today, we’re releasing the results. Here’s the headline on the findings of our Weber Shandwick Social Impact survey: 88% percent of nonprofits are widely experimenting with social media, but only half (51%) are active users. 79% are uncertain of how to demonstrate social media’s value for their organizations.

To us, what’s exciting about these findings is how much they underscore that nonprofit organizations are exploring social media as a means to advance their work. April 27, 2010 A Quick Poll conducted on AFP's website earlier this year showed that two-thirds of nonprofit organizations use social media, but only 17 percent of those that use sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn actually measure its value to the organization. The poll, which received 306 responses, found that one-third of organizations (33 percent) are not currently using social media. Twelve percent of organizations have no plans to use social media, and 21 percent, though they do not use social media now, plan to in the near future.

The poll asked nonprofits to rate their level of involvement with social media (whether they use it or not) and to what degree they measure its value. The largest group of respondents (39 percent) said that they use social media, feeling it is important for reaching the greatest number of donors/potential donors, but that they do not measure its value.
