Universal design refers to broad-spectrum ideas meant to produce buildings, products and environments that are inherently accessible to both people without disabilities and people with disabilities . The term "universal design" was coined by the architect Ronald L. Mace to describe the concept of designing all products and the built environment to be aesthetic and usable to the greatest extent possible by everyone, regardless of their age, ability, or status in life. [ 1 ] However, it was the work of Selwyn Goldsmith, author of Designing for the Disabled (1963), who really pioneered the concept of free access for disabled people.

Design for All is design for human diversity, social inclusion and equality. This holistic and innovative approach constitutes a creative and ethical challenge for all planners, designers, entrepreneurs, administrators and political leaders. Design for All aims to enable all people to have equal opportunities to participate in every aspect of society. A Montréal, du 5 au 7 septembre 2008, Carole-Anne Rivière, directrice du programme d'action "Plus longue la vie.net" , et Daniel Kaplan, délégué général de la Fing, ont participé à la 9e conférence mondiale sur le vieillissement, autour du thème "vieillissement et design" . Ils partagent ici leurs notes à peine retravaillées sur les plus intéressantes interventions de la conférence. Le design peut certes devenir universel, certains besoins demeurent spécifiques. La salle de bain et les toilettes publiques présentent deux exemple de "discrimination" (ou spécificité) de design pour les plus âgés.
