Our goal was to revise a public relations manual for national training. The group leader asked me for an overview of social media with an emphasis on the advantages of participation. Some in government may be wary about participation she explained. What would I say that would prompt them to consider social engagement? What is Social Media: There is no uniform explanation of social media beyond an internet-based effort to communicate and exchange ideas and thoughts with target audiences. Social media depends on what you’re trying to accomplish and what you are willing to do. Today, though, the business of higher education seems to some as susceptible to tech disruption as other information-centric industries such as the news media, magazines and journals, encyclopedias, music, motion pictures, and television.

The transmission of knowledge need no longer be tethered to a college campus. One major driver of the debate about the future of the university centers on its beleaguered business model. This set of circumstances has catalyzed the marketplace. Experimentation and innovation are proliferating.
