Bush and French Word For Entrepreneur. Claim: President George W. Bush proclaimed, "The problem with the French is that they don't have a word for entrepreneur. " Origins: Yet another "George W. Bush is dumb" story has been taken up by those who like their caricatures drawn in stark, bold lines. According to scuttlebutt that emerged in the British press in July 2002, President Bush, Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair, and France's President Jacques Chirac were discussing economics and, in particular, the decline of the French economy.

"The problem with the French," Bush afterwards confided in Blair, "is that they don't have a word for entrepreneur. " The source was Shirley Williams, also known as the Baroness Williams of Crosby, who claimed "my good friend Tony Blair" had recently regaled her with this anecdote in Brighton. This is far from the first time Bush has been made the butt of a jibe meant to showcase what some perceive as his less than stellar intellectual abilities. Barbara "ears of corn" Mikkelson Sources: LinkedIn, Viadeo, Ziki, etc : quel réseau social professionnel utilisez-vous ?

Entrepreneurship. Startup Ideas We'd Like to Fund. Startup Ideas We'd Like to Fund Paul Graham July 2008 When we read Y Combinator applications there are always ideas we're hoping to see. In the past we've never said publicly what they are.

If we say we're looking for x, we'll get applications proposing x, certainly. But then it actually becomes harder to judge them: is this group proposing x because they were already thinking about it, or because they know that's what we want to hear? We don't like to sit on these ideas, though, because we really want people to work on them. Please don't feel that if you want to apply to Y Combinator, you have to work on one of these types of ideas. 1. The answer may be far afield. 2. 3. I want to knock it out of the park. The problem with that is homeruns are very high risk. The chance of a homerun is significantly lower than simply getting on first base. I don’t want to stop dreaming for the homerun, but more training is in order to get there. I really should focus on getting a hit, rather than the homerun — but I’m driven to practice for the homerun, rather than just a hit. There is a trail of dead startups behind me and a money trail that I have burned through. LinkedIn, Viadeo, Ziki, etc : quel réseau social professionnel utilisez-vous ? How to Start the Big Project You've Been Putting Off - Peter Bregman. I want to write a screenplay. I wanted to write one last year, but other work took more time than I expected, and I kept pushing “write screenplay” off my to-do list. I know I’m not alone in struggling to make incremental progress on long-term projects or goals. How do you get started when you have “all the time in the world”? Maybe you have a project with no deadline, like my screenplay. Or maybe you have a deadline that’s months away — like preparing a speech, developing a business plan, or designing a training program.

Doing something big and important is rarely as simple as just getting it done. I know the basic advice: break the work into smaller, more manageable chunks, focus on the next small step that will move you forward, set intermediate deadlines. It’s good advice. Because, ultimately, the reason we procrastinate on a big, long-term project isn’t just because we have too much time or don’t know where to start. I’ve never written a screenplay. I’m afraid. So what’s the antidote? What Startups Can Learn From Haruki Murakami. I’m a big fan of Japanese writer Haruki Murakami. The genius of Murakami is in his discipline, focus and determination.

I see him as a virtual Zen master – an embodiment of wisdom, passion, skills and exceptional will. The elements of his work and life story are inspirational and (here’s where ReadWriteWeb comes in) particularly applicable when you’re running a startup. Therefore in this post, we take a look at what modern technology startups can learn from this Japanese literary master.

The inspiration for this post comes from an autobiographical article by Murakami in the New Yorker Magazine (which Karen Teng, VP of Engineering at my own startup, pointed out to me). Find Your Passion and Commit to it Murakami was a late bloomer, writing his first work at age 29. Whether you’re a blogger or software engineer, you’ve experienced the same feeling: a blog post that has to be written; a piece of code that needs to exist. Murakami faced a choice between his business and a career as a writer. Transnets - Blog LeMonde.fr. About. HBS Working Knowledge - Faculty Research at Harvard Business School. ZeekRewards. Empowering Yourself to Think that Nothing is Impossible. EmailEmail Have you ever wondered why so few of us succeed? We always hear about those people that came up with a simple idea and made millions but most of us react by “oh well, all the simple ideas are gone by now”. What’s ironic is that usually every few months, we hear about another idea that seems brilliant and ridiciously simple. Why does this happen? Perhaps one of the fundamental problems most of us have is thinking that many things are impossible to accomplish.

It’s all our attitude and mindset. Career and Work Stop complaining about your boss and how all those deadlines are impossible to meet. Jason Fried’s Secret To Getting Customers Without Spending A Lot On Advertising [clips] Getting passionate customers without spending heavily on marketing is a theme that comes up a lot in my interviews.

I asked Joe, Mixergy’s new editor, to pull these 2 clips from my interview with Jason Fried about how his company, 37signals, does it. (Transcripts below.) For more on this topic, get Jason’s book, Rework, or listen to his full Mixergy interview. Clip 1: The “real secret” Clip 2: How to do it Clip 1: Eventually, we found out that having an audience is a huge benefit to a company. You know, companies have fans, have customers, but having an audience is like the real secret, I think, to making it, especially today, without having to spend a lot of money on advertising.

We realized when we launched BaseCamp, in 2004, we had a few thousand people reading our blog, and it was a great place to launch it. From that point on, we realized that that was a great place to announce new things. Clip 2: Andrew: A lot of people are going to hear that and say ‘great. Vinicius Vacanti.
