Hopefully by the end of this block you will feel comfortable with triangles. There are so many beautiful quilts made with half square triangles that I would l like to make. Cutting: 1 - 4.5x4.5 inch square (perhaps a larger print) 4 - 3x3 inch squares (out of a medium fabric, similar in color to the 4.5 inch square) 6 - 3x3 inch squares (out of your darkest fabric) Out of your background fabric: 4 - 2.5x4.5 inch rectangles 4 - 2.5x2.5 inch squares 10 - 3x3 inch squares Sewing: Draw a diagonal line down the middle of each of the ten 3x3 background squares. After you sew down one side of the squares, feed the squares through the machine again with out cutting them apart to speed your sewing. As I mentioned earlier today, what I like about these quilts is the ease of coordinating the colors. In decorating, I love it when a whole room is all blue or green and even though the greens or blues may not be exactly the same, the design works since the basic color carries throughout the room. That is the thinking behind these little quilts too. And, you get to use up a lot of those pesky fabric scraps that are cluttering up your sewing room! I have always been amazed at how one simple unit, such as the lowly square can be used in so many different ways! Tho known by many names, quilts made with a simple one size square are timeless: One Patch, Trip Around The World, Sunshine and Shadow, Boston Commons, Postage Stamp, even 9 patch, 4 patch, 16 patch etc.....the fascination for quilters remains the same. To cut my HSTs out for this pillow, I used my Baby Go Cutter and the Half Square 4" Finished Triangle dies. Not every quit is going to look great with an all over design. Some of the designs I showed you before can be used as border designs, although you may have to drop some elements.
