Many of the students were happy to have such a large gathering at the demonstration Wednesday. Students left classes and marched to Sproul Plaza on the UC campus in solidarity for the two unarmed black men killed by police in separate high-profile cases where no charges were filed against police by grand juries in both Ferguson and New York. The high school’s Black Student Union President Khadija Means noted the significance of where the free speech movement started decades ago.

“In a lot of ways Berkeley is a very progressive place and we’re going to tell the nation it’s time, because it ends today,” said Means. Ayana Preston said it’s important that her generation speaks out. “It’s up to the young generation to make change and if we can show that us as teenagers can go out and be passionate about this, then that means something. Protesters had first gathered at the intersection of Telegraph Avenue and Bancroft Way about 7 p.m., after four nights of protests against police brutality and the decisions not to indict in the cases of Michael Brown, an unarmed black man shot by a white officer, and Eric Garner, who died after an officer put him in an apparent chokehold. Protesters first pounded on locked doors then pushed their way inside the crowded auditorium. “We honestly didn’t think the protests would interfere,” said Pierre Bourbonnais, president of the Berkeley Forum and former marketing manager at The Daily Californian.

“It’s pretty unimaginable and unfortunate. I’m in support of free speech, but this is not the right venue for that. A bunch of angry protesters stormed through the doors during a speech by Peter Thiel on Wednesday at UC Berkeley, ultimately shutting down the lecture halfway through the evening's event. Thiel was speaking at an event hosted by the Berkeley Forum, a student organization at UC Berkeley. But after about 20 minutes, protesters came banging on the doors, interrupting the speech multiple times.

A sense of panic seemed to be overtaking the surprised audience, but Thiel went on and continued through the Q&A. At about 7:30 p.m. "F--k you! " After a few seconds of silence, Thiel, in his quiet, calm voice, said: "This is really a classic Berkeley event today — this is so cool! " Although Thiel insisted on going on with the Q&A, the protests got too loud at that point.

The Berkeley Forum, the student organization that hosted the event, later criticized the protesters for depriving Thiel and audience members of the opportunity to “engage in productive discussion.” The incident is yet another deplorable example of the all-too-common “heckler’s veto,” which occurs when people opposed to someone’s viewpoint or expression silence the would-be speaker by creating such a commotion that the speaker is forced to step down. The Berkeley Forum, which describes itself as “non-partisan organization that invites guest speakers who span a variety of viewpoints and perspectives,” wrote in its statement: FIRE hopes that those involved in the protest heed this important reminder.
