Synaptics Clearpad 7300 multitouch display hands-on (Video) Synaptics is a touchscreen-interface company that has around 30 customers, but since that list includes the top 15 smartphone makers and the top 15 tablet manufacturers, it does okay for itself.

The company rented a quiet booth at the back of CES to show off its impressive new ten-finger touchscreen tech. The Clearpad 7300 is a significantly smaller unit: to demonstrate the company pulled apart a HP touchpad and swapped out the 15-chip daughter board with a single chip -- still recognizing ten inputs at a refresh rate of 100Hz. The company also had a Windows 8 demo unit (it's partnered with Redmond) that allows five-finger touch.

It'll allow you to depress a software shift key without toggling and play piano with five fingers at once. We also saw a calibration unit just acting on a piece of glass (held mid-air) that could still register ten interactions. CES 2012: Wrap-up of the show’s best and most bizarre gadgets. Now that we’ve returned from Vegas, pounded enough Emergen-C cocktails to get us back into a semblance of health, and compared notes, we’ve settled on this list of the show’s top products.

Read on to see the most promising hardware that will be hitting store shelves in the coming months. Less a technological breakthrough than a form-factor experiment, the Galaxy Note is notable primarily because, well, it actually works. Up to now, phone and tablet manufacturers have been careful to separate their lines: Phones have 4-inch screens or smaller, while tablets have 7-inch screens or larger.

The embarrassing failure of Dell’s 5-inch Streak confirmed the wisdom of that approach. But in truth, there’s little difference between a tablet and a smartphone, other than size, and for those of us who habitually use 3×5 cards or similar-sized pocket notebooks, a 5-inch diagonal screen is actually just about perfect for holding in one hand while jotting notes with the other. . — SOLOWHEEL. The trouble with CES: too much electronics, not enough consumer.

My colleague Jason Perlow is taking bets that CES will disappear by 2015.

The trouble with CES: too much electronics, not enough consumer

I think, in Vegas sports-book terms, that that's an even-money proposition. It's certainly not a good sign when the organization's Washington, D.C. -based Senior Vice President of Industry Affairs, a presumably well-paid executive with a staff of 40, shows up in my Talkback section to argue with my decision not to attend next year's show. The Coolest Thing I Saw At CES 2012: Samsung’s Transparent Smart Window [Video]

Besides the boat load of Android rockin’ handsets and tablets I did manage to get my grubby little hands on one more “device” and that came in the form of Samsung’s Smart Window. Easily the coolest tech I got to play with at CES this year, Samsung’s Smart Window could be considered the future. Well, that — or completely useless, depending on how you look at it. And even though it wasn’t directly Android related, it doesn’t take a stretch of the imagination to see how a simple swap of the OS could bring Android out of the world of boring old opaque screens and into the wonderful new frontier of transparent displays.

My CES 2012. There's no larger an event the entire year round for tech bloggers such as I, and at the moment, there's no bigger trade show for Consumer Electronics than CES - this being my first full year attending the events inside and surrounding CES 2012, I thought I'd give you a bit of a look inside what it means to be on the publisher's side of this monster storm of keynotes, meetings, and floor time. Now that the week is over, I've got a couple of moments to sit on the couch and attempt to put down everything that happened (viewable through our [CES LIVE Portal]) without having a heart attack over the sleep I've lost, and I'd like for you to snoop in on the situation from this perspective. Once you've read what I've got to say here, please feel free to ask any questions you might have as well.

CES 2012: More Powerful PCs and New Ways to Game.

By John Gaudiosi It was a record year across the board for the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). More than 150,000 people converged in Las Vegas to check out gadgets, computers and electronics from more than 3,100 exhibitors from around the globe. Plenty of new computer technology and games were spread across the 1.85 million net square feet of show floor in the Las Vegas Convention Center and neighboring hotels. And for good reason, consumer electronics are forecast to top $1 trillion in 2012 for the first time, including more than $202 billion in the U.S. alone. Microsoft's CES 2012 keynote won't deliver 'significant news,' more of 'a wrap-up' After learning of Microsoft's plans to stop holding CES keynotes following the 2012 edition, the immediate attention turned to this: would it use its last opportunity on the main stage to make a lasting impact?

Evidently, that answer is "no. " We've confirmed with the company that Steve Ballmer will be "focusing quite a bit on Windows Phone and the its Xbox / entertainment story," while also sharing "momentum from across the company for Windows, Office, Bing, etc. " Ultimately, we're told that there "won't be significant news, but more of a wrap up of the strong year the company has had in consumer.
