http://www.lettersofnote.com/ In October of 1973, Bruce Severy — a 26-year-old English teacher at Drake High School, North Dakota — decided to use Kurt Vonnegut 's novel, Slaughterhouse-Five , as a teaching aid in his classroom. The next month, on November 7th, the head of the school board, Charles McCarthy, demanded that all 32 copies be burned in the school's furnace as a result of its "obscene language." Other books soon met with the same fate. I am writing to you in your capacity as chairman of the Drake School Board.

Letters of Note

Back in December of 1996, worried about the influence of Green Day 's "explicit" fourth album, Insomniac , on her 8-year-old son, a mother decided to write a slightly aggressive letter of complaint to the band. I am a parent, and I am very disturbed by the cassette tape my 8 year old son was listening to. His 60 year old grandmother bought it for him as a birthday present and was totally unaware of its explicit content.

Thing in a Jar

Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth -- more than ruin -- more even than death.... Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habit. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid. Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man. http://www.writersmugs.com/

And now, something from our sponsor... Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved. One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. "Which road do I take?" she asked.
