Flying the P-51 Mustang "Red Nose" By John "Skipper" Hyle Years ago, when I was about 8 years old, I was at Shannon Airport in Fredericksburg, Virginia, watching the annual Father's Day airshow.
The star performer that day was Bob Hoover. This, of course, was before today's high security, when kids were still welcome. I was standing at the rope, about 6 feet away from the rudder when Bob fired up the Merlin. Smoked rolled down the fuselage, and I was hooked on warbirds. A long time after that, I found myself having to make a decision about joining the military -- not because of a draft or a war, but because I wanted to fly the best airplanes I could find.
Some time after that, at a tremendous party in the O’Club at Reese AFB, I was assigned the F-16 -- the "Fighting Falcon" to the PR types, "Viper" to those of us who flew it. After the USAF, I went to the airlines and settled down to fly. Down. The CAF's checkout process is very specific. The Viper. Rudder. Free North American P-51 Mustang Checklists to Download.
P-51 Mustang Performance. The Merlin engined P-51 went operational 1 December 1943 with the 354th Fighter Group based in Boxted UK.
By D-Day, seven 8th Air Force Groups would join them as well as seven RAF Squadrons. In the MTO, the 31st and 52nd Fighter Groups exchanged their Spitfires for Mustangs in spring 1944. The P-51B that equipped these units was delivered with the Packard Merlin V-1650-3 until April 1944, when replacement aircraft began to be delivered with the V-1650-7 engine featuring maximum power peaking at lower altitudes. The P-51 operated on 100/130 grade fuel with War Emergency Power limited to 67" up to June 1944. Deliveries of Grade 100/150 aviation fuel to Eighth Air Force fighter airfields commenced in June 1944. 8910 This coincidentally occured about the same time as the introduction of the P-51D into service.
By January 1945, fourteen of the Eighth Air Force's fifteen Fighter Groups were operating Mustangs, the sole holdout being the 56th FG in P-47's. 1. P 51D Performance Test. III Condition of Airplane Relative to Test With exception of the external load configurations all flights were made at a combat take-off weight of 9760 pounds.
This includes full ammunition, full oil of 21 gallons, full wing gas load of 184 gallons and 25 gallons of gas in the fuselage tank which has a capacity of 85 gallons. The center of gravity at this loading was 27.63% MAC gear down and 27.89% MAC gear up. A photo observer was installed to record data during the climbs. Level flight data was observed by the pilot.
