Er wurde über das Italienische und Französische in der Bedeutung Zusammenklang ins Deutsche aufgenommen. Allerdings ist auch ein lateinischer Ursprung des Begriffes (lat.: ad cor = zum Herzen) möglich. Ursprünglich stand der Begriff „Akkord“ für „Gleichklang“, also für die Erzeugung desselben Tones auf verschiedenen Saiten.
