The Big Bang Theory is an American sitcom created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady , both of whom serve as executive producers on the show, along with Steven Molaro. All three also serve as head writers. It premiered on CBS on September 24, 2007. [ 3 ] The show is centered on five characters: roommates Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper , two physicists who work at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech); Penny , a blonde waitress and aspiring actress who lives across the hall; and Leonard and Sheldon's equally geeky and socially awkward friends and co-workers aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz and astrophysicist Rajesh Koothrappali .

Sir Fred Hoyle FRS (24 June 1915 – 20 August 2001) [ 1 ] was an English astronomer and mathematician noted primarily for his contribution to the theory of stellar nucleosynthesis and his often controversial stance on other cosmological and scientific matters—in particular his rejection of the " Big Bang " theory, a term originally coined by him out of ridicule for the main rival of his own theory. [ 2 ] In addition to his work as an astronomer, Hoyle was a writer of science fiction , including a number of books co-written with his son Geoffrey Hoyle . Hoyle spent most of his working life at the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge and served as its director for a number of years. He died in Bournemouth , England, after a series of strokes .
