New Trees: Introductions to Cultivation Trees - botanical books Kew. "an admirable piece of work for the breadth and depth of its scholarship and for its readability....a treasure-house of information of tree and large shrub species" - Ursula Buchan in the Daily Telegraph, 16 November 2009. The standard and classic work for many dendrologists and arboriculturalists is the multi-volume set of W J Bean's 'Trees and Shrubs Hardy in the British Isles', the eighth edition of which appeared in the 1970's. Frustratingly, most trees introduced since then do not appear in a single work - a deficiency that New Trees aims to correct. Approximately 1,000 species are described in New Trees, accompanied throughout with line drawings by Hazel Wilks and colour photographs. As with 'Bean', each species account provides a botanical description and discussion of the tree in the wild, together with its attributes, performance and cultivation requirements in the garden.

Soil carbon lands <br/> new offsets methodology. Soil Carbon Lands Market Opportunities Through New Offset Methodology Author: Daphne Yin The Verified Carbon Standard recently approved The Earth Partners’ soil carbon methodology for use on agricultural offset projects. The methodology, while new to the carbon markets, is grounded on decades’ worth of USDA science – with the capacity to cover most ecosystems and land types.

The science is there. The challenge, as always, is scaling up. 12 December 2012 | Vast stretches of fertile loess deposits have helped shape the Palouse and Columbia Plateau region of the United States into one of the world’s most agriculturally productive regions. The Earth Partners (TEP), an alliance of professionals working in finance, project development, ecosystem restoration and land management, developed a soil carbon quantification methodology – recently approved for use under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) – to support more sustainable methods of agriculture and other land use.

Prairie Crossing events, Grayslake, IL. Gaviotas. Gaviotas is an ecovillage located in the llanos of the Colombian department of Vichada. It was founded in 1971 by Paolo Lugari who assembled a group of engineers and scientists in an attempt to create a mode of sustainable living in one of the least hospitable political and geographical climates in South America. Technology[edit] The community has produced a number of inventions and innovations over the years - notably including a children's seesaw that drives a water pump and a "distinctive 'sunflower' design" windmill that is well-suited to the plains in Colombia.

Lugari notes that social experiments cannot simply import solutions from temperate climates. Gaviotas has made it a goal to always engineer solutions specific to the problems the community will be facing personally (Gaviotas Rising 1994). Gaviotas Day[edit] Healthcare advances[edit] Environmental impact[edit] While the village is largely self-sufficient, it regularly uses diesel fuel during certain seasons. Tool Kits :: National Community Land Trust Network. Any Community Land Trust project will need to make big decisions about how it conducts its business. The following tools are designed to help you make those choices. They are designed to be practical, and to inform your approach from start-up to development and management. The CLT Legal Toolkit provides guidance on the legal structures that may be suitable for you in establishing a CLT. It covers many of the issues you will need to consider in establishing a legal form and highlights some of the differences that may influence which legal structure and governance arrangements are more suited to your local situation.

This toolkit does not provide a comprehensive statement of the law as it applies to the different structures and specific advice should be taken on your particular requirements at the legal formation stage. For more information about legal structures, see Start a CLT: Governance and Legal Structures. Click to access the toolkit. Financial appraisal tool Advice line Disclaimer. Welcome to the Northwest Cooperative Development Center on the web! Real Estate Investment Trusts. A real estate investment trust (“REIT”), generally, is a company that owns – and typically operates – income-producing real estate or real estate-related assets. REITs provide a way for individual investors to earn a share of the income produced through commercial real estate ownership – without actually having to go out and buy commercial real estate.

The income-producing real estate assets owned by a REIT may include office buildings, shopping malls, apartments, hotels, resorts, self-storage facilities, warehouses, and mortgages or loans. Most REITs specialize in a single type of real estate – for example, apartment communities. There are retail REITs, office REITs, residential REITs, healthcare REITs, and industrial REITs, to name a few. To qualify as a REIT, a company must have the bulk of its assets and income connected to real estate investment and must distribute at least 90 percent of its taxable income to shareholders annually in the form of dividends.

The United States Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency (FSA) oversees a number of voluntary conservation-related programs. These programs work to address a large number of farming and ranching related conservation issues including: Drinking water protection Reducing soil erosion Wildlife habitat preservation Preservation and restoration of forests and wetlands Aiding farmers whose farms are damaged by natural disasters FSA accomplishes these goals through the conservation programs listed below. The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) pays a yearly rental payment in exchange for farmers removing environmentally sensitive land from agricultural production and planting species that will improve environmental quality. The Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP), an offshoot of CRP, targets high-priority conservation issues identified by government and non-governmental organizations.

For a list of FAQs, visit Ask FSA. BCAP Project Area Information. BCAP assistance for the establishment and production of biomass crops is available within designated project areas. BCAP project areas are specific geographic areas where producers may enroll land to grow specified biomass crops. Participants may be eligible to receive financial and technical assistance as well as annual payments to establish these crops.

Project areas are established based on proposals submitted to FSA by either a group of producers or an entity that converts biomass to heat, power, a biobased product or an advanced biofuel. Those interested in submitting a proposal are encouraged to contact their FSA state office for details. Upon designation of a project area, certain producers within the project area are then eligible to enroll land into the program. How BCAP Project Area Contracts works Producers within a designated BCAP project area may apply to enroll land into the program and receive assistance to grow eligible biomass crops.

Put them to "work" on your land and watch them do important tasks like improve water quality, control soil erosion, increase agricultural production, and provide wildlife habitat. The Working Trees concept was a fundamental step towards helping the USDA National Agroforestry Center effectively communicate the role that trees can play in agricultural systems. The Working Trees concept was the brainchild of now-retired Forest Service Lead Agroforester, Jerry (JB) Bratton.

As the USDA National Agroforestry Center (NAC) began to take shape in the early 1990's, an informational brochure about agroforestry was needed. One of Jerry's favorite sayings is, "Working Trees really earn their room and board! " Agroforestry is not yet a common word for farmers, ranchers, and foresters. Working Trees Brochures are 6-page publications that serve as a great introduction to agroforestry. St. Symbiosis Soil Solutions. Archangel Ancient Tree Archive | Contact Us. Sustainable Land Development Initiative, Author at TriplePundit. Recent Articles A Budding Model of a Truly Sustainable Community Here at SLDI, we’ve witnessed thousands of communities heap praise on themselves for their virtues of “green” and “sustainability.” Most of these communities we’ve seen, however, are long on hype but woefully short on truly transformational action that balances the needs of people, planet and profit.

Most of these communities take public pride in slowing down their unsustainable practices. While those efforts are perhaps the beginning, we often use the analogy that if you need to get somewhere and you’re driving 100 mph in the opposite direction, you’re still never going to get there by continuing in the same direction but slowing down to 50 mph. We need to stop the car and turn it around, which continues to prove to be a daunting challenge for most everyone. Grassroots education, not hype Stakeholders in the Port Orford Community Stewardship Area (POCSA) are beginning to take transformative action.
