Science Mission Directorate. Earth is a truly unique in its abundance of water.

Science Mission Directorate

Water is necessary to sustaining life on Earth, and helps tie together the Earth's lands, oceans, and atmosphere into an integrated system. Precipitation, evaporation, freezing and melting and condensation are all part of the hydrological cycle - a never-ending global process of water circulation from clouds to land, to the ocean, and back to the clouds. This cycling of water is intimately linked with energy exchanges among the atmosphere, ocean, and land that determine the Earth's climate and cause much of natural climate variability.

The impacts of climate change and variability on the quality of human life occur primarily through changes in the water cycle. As stated in the National Research Council's report on Research Pathways for the Next Decade (NRC, 1999): "Water is at the heart of both the causes and effects of climate change. " Importance of the ocean in the water cycle The ocean plays a key role in this vital cycle of water. A global map of wind, weather, and ocean conditions. Rendering Globe...

This is a collaborative geosciences grant, lead by Paul Baker (Duke University) and Sheri Fritz (University of Nebraska). Co-PI Stephen Smith and I will be integrating phylogenetic analyses of Andean-Amazon plant groups with models of regional geological and atmospheric history. Miles Silman (Wake Forest University) is collaborating on the ecological and field components of this project in Peru. Zambia. Topography The country is on the great plateau of Central Africa, at an average altitude of 1,200 metres.

zambia

Figure 10 shows the topography of Zambia. The lower parts of the plateau (dambos) have a reliable supply of water during the dry season. They are flooded in the rainy season. Uruguay. The Republic Oriental del Uruguay is in the southeast of South America, between 30º and 35º South and 54º and 59° West.

Uruguay

It borders Brazil to the north, Argentina to the west, the Rio de la Plata to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the east (see Figure 1). The total land area is 176,215 km2, with 137,567 km2 of national water. Uruguay is divided into nineteen administrative departments (see Figure 2). Figure 1. Paraguay. There are about 10,000,000 head of cattle, 400,000 sheep, 350,000 horses, 120,000 goats plus 1,800,000 pigs and some 15,000,000 poultry in Paraguay (DCEA 2000).

Paraguay

Figures in FAOSTAT for 2005 are 9.6M cattle; 500,000 sheep; 360,000 horses; 155,000 goats; 1.6M pigs and 17.9M poultry (FAO, 2006). Hence, cattle raising for meat and milk is by far the most important livestock sector. Livestock numbers are shown in Table 1. Indonesia. Chile. The Chilean grasslands, with emphasis on sown and improved pastures, have been reviewed in detail by Ruiz (1996), and what follows is largely based on chapters therein and in Gastó and Gallardo (1995) and Ahumada and Faúndez (2002).

Chile

It should be noted that pasture research has had a long and distinguished trajectory in the country, although the sector has lost importance and financial resources during the last 20 years, coinciding with the emphasis placed on the production of high value crops for export such as fruits, vineyards and horticultural crops. A detailed annotated list of references relating to pasture research in Chile up to 1982 has been published (Paladines and Muñoz, 1982). Brazil. Brazil is a very young country.

Brazil

It was discovered in 1500 by the Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral and was Portuguese until 1822, when it became independent. Abolition of slavery came in the same century, in 1888, and the first Republic was established two years later. The large majority of slaves brought to Brazil came from African ethnic groups including Bantu from Southern Africa (the Congo, Angola and Mozambique), as well as Samba, Moxicongo and Anjico, and ethnic groups from the north-western coast of Africa such as Nago, Jeje, Fanti, Achanti Haussa, Mandinga, Tapa and Fulla, originating from regions from Senegal to Nigeria. $300 Underground Greenhouse Grows Produce Year-Round, Even in Severe Climates

Sadly, most greenhouses are expensive to build and impractical to heat during cold, wintery conditions. Thankfully, a solution is found with the Walipini. Developed for South American mountainous regions over twenty years ago, it allows edibles to be grown year-round – even in the most inhospitable weather.

As an added bonus, it’s also outrageously inexpensive to construct. Known as a pit or underground greenhouse, the Walipini utilizes the advantages of passive solar heating along with earth sheltering properties. “The Walipini, in simplest terms, is a rectangular hole in the ground 6′ to 8′ deep covered by plastic sheeting. The Institute continues with an explanation of how the earth acts like a battery, storing heat during the day while releasing it during cooler nighttime temperatures:

Genetic Engineering of Algae for Enhanced Biofuel Production. Aquaponics. Main > Food and Agriculture > Controlled-environment growing Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics (growing plants using water rather than soil). It is an incredibly productive means of growing food, allowing a person to sustain themselves on less than 100m2.

Some people with large systems growing 5000 plants a week have reported that, once their system is set up, they earn €1000 a week spending 2 hours a day at work. 16 Year Old Girl Invents Bio-plastic from Banana Peels. The typical 16 year old is not usually concerned with starch and cellulose based biomass that can be used as feedstock for bio-plastic. But then again, Elif Bilgin is far from typical. Winner of the $50,000 prize from the Science in Action Award, part of the 2013 Google Science Fair, Elif found a way to produce bio-plastic from banana peels. DIY Aquaponics System Design & Build. About Growing Together: Aquaponics in Rural Israel and Palestine. Starting in September 2013, IPCRI and Byspokes are introducing water-efficient food production systems in two communities identified as being disproportionately impacted by the conflict;these communities are a Bedouin village in Israel's Negev and a refugee camp in the West Bank.
