"The integration of all elements -- environment, constructed sections, time, space, and people -- has been my main technical problem... " Allan Kaprow was a pivotal figure in the shifting art world of the 1960s; his "happenings," a form of spontaneous, non-linear action, revolutionized the practice of performance art. While Kaprow began as a painter, by the mid 1950s his interest turned to the theoretical, based primarily on the shifting concepts of space as subjectively experienced by the viewer.

Kaprow emerged from the group of artists known as the Rutgers Group, based out of Rutgers University where Kaprow taught art history and studio art. Kaprow was among the many artists and critics who focused on an intellectual and theorized view of art, rejecting the monumental nature of Abstract Expressionist works and instead focusing on the act of their production. Kaprow's happenings changed the definition of the art object. Childhood Allan Kaprow was born in 1927 in New Jersey. Mature Period. Performance Art 101: The Happening, Allan Kaprow. The artist who coined the term ‘happening’ was Allan Kaprow, an artist and lecturer who had studied painting with one of the key exponents of Abstract Expressionism, Hans Hofmann, in the 1940s. Unlike the influential critic Clement Greenberg, Kaprow was less interested in the art object (paintings) than in the way they were created: he was excited by the performative possibilities of painting. Hans Namuth’s 1951 photos and film of Jackson Pollock – the James Dean of the art world – making his paintings illustrated a new direction for Kaprow, where the artist was within the work, while making the work.

After Pollock’s death, Kaprow wrote an essay on the Legacy of Pollock: exploring what he thought Pollock had meant for painting, art and life. He suggested that the art to come was one that incorporated everyday life, and everyday objects. In 1957 Kaprow went on a mushroom hunt with artist, composer and founder member of the Fluxus group George Brecht and John Cage.

Marina Abramovic. Kaprow_recent. Francis Bacon Head VI 1949. Georg Baselitz Finger Painting - Eagle, 1972. What is an eagle to a painter, you might profitably ask? Given that Baselitz refuses to accept narrative or political interpretations of his work – after all, this is why he began to invert his motifs about 40 years ago, in order to let the narrative content spill out and drain away – we should not hurry to call this eagle an emblem of the doomed Reich, a symbol of Roman power, an image of Zeus preying upon the hapless Ganymede or any of those other multifarious interpretative possibilities. The very fact that it is upside down increases its sense of helplessness. It could be the carcass of an eagle, suspended from a hook, ripe for the plucking. What cannot be denied is the ferocity of the painter's attack. It feels as if it has been done quickly, as if the work of making it has been not so much the consequence of a careful, meditative appraisal, as a kind of sparring with what it represents – Baselitz has always painted at speed, and that speed has increased with the years.

Mark Rothko | Classic Paintings 6. Mark Rothko, Untitled,1953, National Gallery of Art, Gift of The Mark Rothko Foundation, Inc., 1986.43.135 Through his pursuit of a deeply original pictorial language, Rothko maintained a commitment to profound content. Although he rarely specified a precise interpretation for these works, he believed in their potential for metaphysical or symbolic meaning.

In a lecture at the Pratt Institute, Rothko told the audience that "small pictures since the Renaissance are like novels; large pictures are like dramas in which one participates in a direct way. Fountain is one of Duchamp’s most famous works and is widely seen as an icon of twentieth-century art. The original, which is lost, consisted of a standard urinal, usually presented on its back for exhibition purposes rather than upright, and was signed and dated ‘R. Mutt 1917’. Tate’s work is a 1964 replica and is made from glazed earthenware painted to resemble the original porcelain. The signature is reproduced in black paint. Fountain has been seen as a quintessential example, along with Duchamp’s Bottle Rack 1914, of what he called a ‘readymade’, an ordinary manufactured object designated by the artist as a work of art (and, in Duchamp’s case, interpreted in some way).

Duchamp later recalled that the idea for Fountain arose from a discussion with the collector Walter Arensberg (1878–1954) and the artist Joseph Stella (1877–1946) in New York. This was no small matter. ‘R. Mutt comes from Mott Works, the name of a large sanitary equipment manufacturer. Robert Rauschenberg - About the Artist | American Masters. Born in Port Arthur, Texas in 1925, Robert Rauschenberg imagined himself first as a minister and later as a pharmacist. It wasn’t until 1947, while in the U.S. Marines that he discovered his aptitude for drawing and his interest in the artistic representation of everyday objects and people.

After leaving the Marines he studied art in Paris on the G.I. Bill, but quickly became disenchanted with the European art scene. After less than a year he moved to North Carolina, where the country’s most visionary artists and thinkers, such as Joseph Albers and Buckminster Fuller, were teaching at Black Mountain College. There, with artists such as dancer Merce Cunningham and musician John Cage, Rauschenberg began what was to be an artistic revolution. Soon, North Carolina country life began to seem small and he left for New York to make it as a painter. Throughout the ’80s and ’90s Rauschenberg continued his experimentation, concentrating primarily on collage and new ways to transfer photographs. Jasper Johns. Jasper Johns - About the Painter | American Masters. In the late 1950’s, Jasper Johns emerged as force in the American art scene. His richly worked paintings of maps, flags, and targets led the artistic community away from Abstract Expressionism toward a new emphasis on the concrete.

Johns laid the groundwork for both Pop Art and Minimalism. Today, as his prints and paintings set record prices at auction, the meanings of his paintings, his imagery, and his changing style continue to be subjects of controversy. Born in Augusta, Georgia, and raised in Allendale, South Carolina, Jasper Johns grew up wanting to be an artist.

In New York, Johns met a number of other artists including the composer John Cage, the choreographer Merce Cunningham, and the painter Robert Rauschenberg. The modern art community was searching for new ideas to succeed the pure emotionality of the Abstract Expressionists. In 1958, gallery owner Leo Castelli visited Rauschenberg’s studio and saw Johns’ work for the first time. New Website - Merce Cunningham Trust. Ai Weiwei: Sunflower Seeds. 1 of 4 About the exhibition Sunflower Seeds is made up of millions of small works, each apparently identical, but actually unique. However realistic they may seem, these life-sized sunflower seed husks are in fact intricately hand-crafted in porcelain.

Each seed has been individually sculpted and painted by specialists working in small-scale workshops in the Chinese city of Jingdezhen. Far from being industrially produced, they are the effort of hundreds of skilled hands. Porcelain is almost synonymous with China and, to make this work, Ai Weiwei has manipulated traditional methods of crafting what has historically been one of China’s most prized exports. Update: Friday 22 October 2010 The landscape of sunflower seeds can be looked upon from the Turbine Hall bridge, or viewed at close range in the east end of the Turbine Hall on Level 1. Sunflower Seeds is a total work made up of millions of individual pieces which together from a single unique surface. Juliet Bingham, Curator, Tate Modern.

Ed Ruscha | Catalogue Raisonné. Cindy Sherman (American, born 1954) American photographer. While still growing up she was drawn to the television environment of the 1960s and fascinated by disguise and make-up. She studied art at Buffalo State College (1972–6), concentrating on photography, which she maintained is the appropriate medium of expression in our media-dominated civilization.

Her photographs are portraits of herself in various scenarios that parody stereotypes of woman. A panoply of characters and settings is drawn from sources of popular culture: old movies, television soaps and pulp magazines. Sherman rapidly rose to celebrity status in the international art world during the early 1980s with the presentation of a series of untitled ‘film stills’ in various group and solo exhibitions across America and Europe. Among 130 ‘film stills’ taken between 1978 and 1980 are portraits of Sherman in the role of such screen idols as Sophia Loren and Marilyn Monroe.
