3D Printing/Design. Multiple Raspberry PI 3D Scanner. I am using Raspian OS, just the default download from the raspberry pi website.

Multiple Raspberry PI 3D Scanner

To collect all the images, I am using a central file server (in my case I am using a Qnap). I configured the raspbian image to connect to the file server using cifs. This is done in the /etc/fstab file. I am also using the central file server to store my software, so I can make modifications without having to update every raspberry on its own. After I completed this image, I used dd (on my mac) to clone the SD card 40x for each raspberry.

I wanted to write a "listening" script that each raspberry would run, listening to a particular network broadcast package that would trigger the camera and then save the photo and copy it to the file server. ProFORMA: Probabilistic Feature-based On-line Rapid Model Acquisition [Home] [2009 BMVC Paper (6.3MB)] [BibTeX] Off-line model reconstruction relies on an image collection phase and a slow reconstruction phase, requiring a long time to verify a model obtained from an image sequence is acceptable. We propose a new model acquisition system, called ProFORMA, which generates a 3D model on-line as the input sequence is being collected. As the user rotates the object in front of a stationary camera, a partial model is reconstructed and displayed to the user to assist view planning. MakerBot announces 3D 'Digitizer' prototype to scan your world, then print it out

The scanner uses a combination of cameras and lasers to scan an object and create a digital file that can then be printed using one of MakerBot's replicators. The company says you won't need any experience with design or 3D modeling software to make use of the scanner, and wants to see it used by businesses, educational facilities, and in the home.

3D printed plastic house will be assembled "in a day" News: London architecture collective Softkill Design has joined the race to build the world's first 3D printed house, announcing plans for a plastic dwelling that could be built off-site in three weeks and assembled in a single day.

3D printed plastic house will be assembled "in a day"

"It will hopefully be the first actual 3D printed house on site," said Gilles Retsin of Softkill Design. "We are hoping to have the first prototype out in the summer. " Update: read the full interview with Retsin about 3D-printed architecture. The single-storey Protohouse 2.0 will be eight metres wide and four metres long and will be printed in sections in a factory. The parts will be small enough to be transported in vans and then snapped together on site. "It would take up to three weeks to have all the pieces fabricated," said Retsin.

This Mind-Controlled 3-D Printer Generates Creatures From Your Kid's Brainwaves. When Bryan Salt, a creative director from the U.K., was a kid, he would dream "of a machine that could create real objects from thought alone: to imagine a thing and it would appear in front of me ready made.

This Mind-Controlled 3-D Printer Generates Creatures From Your Kid's Brainwaves

" Salt is working to make that dream a reality with his Chile-based startup Thinker Thing, which is in the process of creating a system called the Monster Dreamer that can generate 3-D models of creatures built from children’s brainwave data via a sensor-equipped headset. From there, those objects are easily realized in plastic with a MakerBot. I caught up with Salt over Facebook chat, and he explained how exactly Thinker Thing is able to create 3-D models by reading brain waves. Hungry For Dinner? Hungry For Dinner? Just Hit 'Print'

Believe it or not, this could be a daily question for many families, if you believe some scientists and futurists. Scientists say the same technology that allows three-dimensional objects to be designed on a computer and physically created on-demand can work similarly for food—and that we may soon be able to “print” entire meals with the click of a button. At a Cornell University lab, researchers have a printer that can fabricate cakes that, when sliced into, reveal embedded messages.

Working from electronic blueprints, “solid freeform fabrication,” as this process is called, uses edible inks to custom-print food. Chocolates, cookies and cakes are one thing, but would you eat “printed-out” fish or meat? “Three-dimensional printing has taken off big time, and printing things such as whipped cream is just another application of it—but it’s no big deal,” Professor Gabor Forgacs, of the University of Missouri, told BBC News recently.

First fully articulated 3D printed dress flaunts a woman's curves... and the Fibonacci Sequence. The world of fashion has already brought 3D-printed dresses into the fold, but we don't remember ever seeing one quite like this: a fully-articulated, 3D-printed gown with nearly 3,000 joints, allowing it to delicately drape and seductively flow with the curves of the woman who wears it.

In this case, it's burlesque star and model Dita Von Teese donning the nylon dress, which was crafted exclusively for her by design studios Francis Bitonti and Michael Schmidt. Von Teese modeled the dress at the Ace Hotel in New York City earlier this week. The gown is adorned with over 12,000 Swarovski crystals and — designers claim — follows the Fibonacci Sequence in the way it curves around a woman's body, in order to maximize its theoretical beauty. 17 distinct sections were 3D-printed by 3D-printing service Shapeways, with "thousands of unique components... in a flowing mesh designed exactly to fit Dita's body. The promises of customization and its potential to disrupt the market are of great interest.

It’s being exploited by scientists to help them print lab supplies at a reduced costs, because as anyone who has worked in a lab knows, some small specialized pieces of plastic can be ridiculously expensive. Jonathan Eisen has shared some of the 3D printing that has been done in his lab. 3D Printing Technology Poised for New Industrial Revolution.

When the TV series Star Trek first brought the starship Enterprise into German living rooms, the concept of a replicator was pure science fiction, a fantastical utopian vision we might experience one day centuries in the future. Replicators, something of a mixture between computer and miniature factory, were capable of creating food and replacement parts from next to nothing. They were highly practical devices, since Captain Kirk couldn't exactly take along a lot of supplies for his journeys through outer space. That futuristic vision, though, has receded far into the past -- overtaken by the present. 3D printing: a replicator and teleporter in every home. In a few years, 3D printers will become a consumer electronics commodity. Today you can buy a MakerBot Thing-O-Matic, “the latest in cutting edge personal manufacturing technology,” for $2,500.

You can plug it into your computer via USB, load up some freely-available 3D modeling software, and print stuff; it really is that simple. The only real barrier to mass adoption is the initial purchase price, and the printing material itself isn’t cheap either. Both of these costs will tumble in coming years, however. Printing — or additive manufacturing — techniques will improve. 3D printers will speed up, and the choice of colors and finishes will expand. Peachy Printer - The world's first $100 3D Printer. Sep.21, 2013 Unlike most low cost 3D printers on the market which focus on using cheap component but similiar 3D printer design, Saskatchewan, Canada based Rylan Grayson invented his own: the Peachy Printer, the world's first $100 3D printer. The peachy printer is a Photolithographic printer which uses a controlled beam of light to cure light sensitive resin into hard objects. The peachy moves a laser beam along the X and Y axes to create the shape of the object, while using a drip system to control the level of the resin on the Z axis which determines the height of the object.
