School Cafeteria Workers In Western Pennsylvania Win Right To Eat Expired Food For Free. You know that public school employee salaries are low when cafeteria workers fight for the right to eat expired food -- at their own risk. Unionized cafeteria workers in Sharon, Pa. just won that right after members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees a grievance against the Sharpsville Area School District last year. Workers argued that the school district "violated established best practice" when school officials no longer allowed them to eat the expired food for free, and instead charging them for food items that could no longer be sold to students in compliance with food safety regulations because they were past expiration or had been reheated.

According to the settlement, "cafeteria employees indeed can eat and drink those expired or reheated items –- at their own risk. And they don’t have to pay for them," The Herald of Sharon, Pa. reports. But the workers still have to pay for unexpired items and can't sell or give the expired food to another person. Noah's First Taste Of Root Beer: Adorable Toddler Discovers New Favorite Drink (WATCH) You never forget the firsts -- steps, words, the first day of school, even the first date... For YouTube user, jamest77vb, his son Noah's first sip of root beer is destined to be one of those unforgettable moments.

Lucky for us, Dad caught his toddler's reaction to the drink on camera. Noah's hands are in the air before he even takes one sip and gets hooked; he giggles and squirms then reaches for more. Adorableness ensues. Much like all of those hilarious videos of babies trying lemons, the 47-second clip has already gone viral with over 300,000 views on YouTube. (h/t Viral Viral Video) Let Buttermilk Kitchen Make You Breakfast This Fall - Coming Attractions. Why Nacho Cheese Doritos Taste Like Heaven. Editor's note: Welcome to a new column called Chip-Faced! Our buddy Dan Souza has always been fascinated with the world of chips. We want the man to nerd out about chips here, and explain to us why they taste so damn good. He'll investigate various chip styles, flavorings, and discontinued varieties. Take it away, Dan! [Photographs: Daniel Souza] I'm not going to start things off with childhood anecdotes of good times spent around a freshly opened, crinkly bag of Doritos.

I don't love Nacho Cheese Doritos because my late grandfather used to sneak them to me under the pew during tedious Sunday sermons (he didn't). The crunch of Doritos (something I plan to cover in great detail in a later post) is incredibly important, but today we're focusing on the cheesy seasoning. At first glance it's a bit overwhelming (maltodextrin and sodium caseinate, you say?) There are a few natural umami bombs in there, namely Romano cheese, cheddar cheese, and tomato powder. The Menu | Meatopia. Meatopia 2012 isn’t a culinary festival. On the contrary. It is the CITY OF MEAT. The CITY OF MEAT has its own byways, its neighborhoods, its alleys and cul-de-sacs. It is a labyrinth of carnal turpitude, a maze of meat-cookery, each cluster catering to a different taste, a different animal, a different mood. Like the great city of which is the temporary capital, it contains multitudes, all undone by their love of beef, pork, lamb, veal, and game. Restaurant review of Freddy Smalls, a small-plate gastropub in L.A. No reservations. Loud. A gastropub from the Counter owner Jeff Weinstein and a consulting chef known for his vegetarian cooking. In theory, Freddy Smalls didn't sound all that appealing. Plus, it is small, making it almost a guarantee that you're going to have to wait, except on an especially slow night. And my dining crew is generally more impatient than I am. I finally risked it on a weeknight. Once we were seated, though, Freddy Smalls won me and my guests over with its energy and verve.

The place has a great sociable vibe and an understated, time-worn look. The food is roomy too. For those who've stopped by for a cocktail from former Seven Grand mixologist David Fleisher, Freddy Smalls has snacks to accompany that Stumbling Cowboy (Old Overholdt rye, house-made sarsaparilla, candied ginger and lemon garnish) or house G&T made with celery bitters and house tonic.

While you're there, you might as well delve into some of Parker's "smalls. " The menu is original and lighthearted. No consensus on EU proposal to ban practice of discarding unwanted fish | Environment. Whether or not fishermen should be permitted to throw away healthy fish at sea instead of selling them to consumers will come to a head at a crunch meeting of Europe's fisheries ministers on Tuesday.

But the UK has still not fully worked out its position ahead of the crunch meeting in Luxembourg, because the Scottish government is not convinced that bringing in a ban on "discards" by 2014 or 2015 will be good for its fishing industry. The meeting is finely balanced – France, Portugal and Poland are among the countries that may object to a discards ban, while Spain is understood to be wavering. It is impossible to predict whether a ban, along with other key reforms, will be passed. If the wasteful practice of discarding edible fish at sea is not banned, according to experts, the result will be the destruction of what remains of Europe's dwindling fish stocks.

When France made its push, it had the support of Spain, with a government also relatively recently elected. Burger King bets on bacon sundae for summertime. Big Bang Ball 2012 - The Goat Farm - June 23, 2012. Tavern on the Green to Close Next Week. Glenn Collins The Central Park Visitor Center at Tavern on the Green — which for 18 months has occupied the building that held the once-glittering landmark restaurant Tavern on the Green — will close on Wednesday afternoon for more than a year for a $9.8-million renovation project that will prepare the structure for a new restaurant tenant, as yet unnamed.

The city originally spent $2.5 million to stabilize the building, patch its roof and upgrade its heating, ventilation, wiring and sprinkler systems before the Parks Commissioner, Adrian Benepe, opened the visitor center to much fanfare in October 2010. Joe Soldevere, a spokesman for the New York City Department of Design and Construction, said the new renovation — to be completed in the summer of 2013 — will restore the building’s historic facade, install a new slate roof, upgrade mechanical systems and spruce up the core and shell of the structure in preparation for its occupancy by a new concessionaire.
