New research just published in the most recent Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition suggests that eating raisins may provide the same workout boost as sports chews. Conducted by researchers at the University of California-Davis, the study evaluated the effects that natural versus commercial carbohydrate supplements have on endurance running performance. Runners depleted their glycogen stores in an 80-minute 75% V02 max run followed by a 5k time trial.

Runners completed three randomized trials (raisins, chews and water only) separated by seven days. Findings included: - Those that ingested raisins or sports chews ran their 5k on average one minute faster than those that ingested only water. - Eating raisins and sports chews promoted higher carbohydrate oxidation compared to water only. The study was funded by the California Raisin Marketing Board. Visit www.loveyourraisins.com for further information and summaries of California Raisins' nutrition research. Q&A: World food and fuel prices. 10 August 2012Last updated at 16:24 GMT Continue reading the main story There seems to be no end to the volatility in food prices around the world.

Extreme weather conditions have hit grain crops in the US Midwest and the western corn belt, prompting fears of food shortages and sending prices higher. As a result, it has come as no surprise that the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) food price index saw a sharp rebound in July after three consecutive months of decline. But the wholesale cost of food, as measured by the FAO, is still well below the record high hit in February 2011. However, retail food price rises are still a major factor in consumer price inflation in the UK and around the world, giving rise to accusations that speculators are responsible for driving up the price of our weekly shopping basket. What are the main pressures on food prices?

The FAO said in July that "the overall supply and demand situation in 2012-13 remains adequate". What about speculators? The Salt. One day all food packaging could itself be edible. Photograph: Andy Weekes/Rex Features Pouring your milk then eating the bottle sounds less than tempting, but edible packaging is being touted as food technology's next Big Thing. It's not entirely new, of course. Heston Blumenthal's been at it for years, wrapping palatable paper around packets of soup and urging us to eat salted caramels wrapper and all. Anyone who has eaten turron also knows the slightly odd sensation of rice paper melting in their mouth. Leading the way (in publicity terms, at least) is the Dumbledore of food technology, Harvard wizard Dr David Edwards whose previous innovations include an "breathable" chocolate delightfully called Le Whif.

So far, Dr Edwards and his team at Harvard's Wyss Institute have created a tomato membrane containing gazpacho soup, an orange membrane filled with orange juice that can be sipped through a straw, a grape-like membrane holding wine and a chocolate membrane containing hot chocolate.

Children's Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative. Mpanies must do more to guarantee children's nutrition | Guardian Sustainable Business | Guardian Professional. Nutrition is a key part of a child's survival and development, and is more critical than ever in a world of rising food prices, increasing population and widening environmental degradation. To that end, companies have an enormous opportunity to demonstrate the role they can play in keeping children healthy and in providing safer, more nutritious and affordable options than are currently available.

The issues surrounding child nutrition transcend all countries, from the developing world's poor rural areas to affluent cities in wealthy OECD nations. Consumers are increasingly putting pressure on companies to sell more healthy food products, especially where those products are aimed at children. However, the tactics employed by businesses vary and can often do more to galvanise the opposition of industry groups and lobbyists than make a real difference to children's health. The road to providing more healthy options isn't a smooth one.
