How to Increase Participation in Your Twitter Chat or Any Online Community. Interaction and participation. It’s something many community sites and managers struggle with and focus on increasing. Engagement is the lifeblood of many online communities, and yet, so many struggle to reach that ‘critical mass’ of participants. When #Blogchat started in early 2009, participation wasn’t an issue. Even in those 1st few weeks where we’d only have a few hundred tweets, there was plenty of engagement. If you think about it, you see this in a lot of online communities, especially knowledge-based ones.

What started happening is that I would talk to people that follow #Blogchat, and when they told me they lurked, I would invite them to participate. ”#Blogchat is so much better when more people participate so we can all learn from each other!” I hated hearing that. That’s not to say that smart people can’t and shouldn’t participate, but I wanted to communicate to everyone that they should feel comfortable participating. 1 – Encourage involvement from lurkers. Mack Collier on brands and Twitter chats « The Bazaarvoice Social Commerce Blog. On Sunday, July 17th, Bazaarvoice CMO Erin Nelson and I were guests on Mack Collier’s #Blogchat, the most active chat on Twitter. We discussed how to handle negative comments, and you can grab the transcript here. I have always loved #Blogchat, and I knew that it played a huge role in defining what Twitter chats should look like—but the report on that week’s amazing numbers (3.6k tweets, 460 contributors, 16 million impressions, 1.7 million reached) made me want to find out what makes #Blogchat tick, and how companies can participate.

So I asked Mack. Did you have any idea #Blogchat would become what it is today when you started it? What need is it tapping into? Collier: No, it happened completely by accident. I think #Blogchat works because the participation level is so high. Has the scope of the subject matter expanded with audience growth? Honestly it really hasn’t that much. What value should brands see in Twitter chats like yours, and how should they participate? Tags. Sunday’s #Blogchat topic – How to Respond to Negative Comments. The Nerd Connection You Need for Tech and Wordpress. Balticon 47. Wow. What a rush. I’ve got a lot to go over, and I’m not sure how I’m going to do it all. Suffice it to say I had more panels this year than EVAR before. 16 I was listed for. 15 that I actually made. I ended up having to skip the Never Have I Ever panel due to a pre-existing commitment elsewhere. I then got tagged for the WordPress 101 panel that I had not only written up as an idea the year before, but been listed on this year’s online panel pdf, but then been taken off of for some unknown reason.

People I met I’ve been to Balticon every year since I met BrandG in 2008. Some of the highlights of this Balticon include getting married on Thursday [the day before Balticon 47 officially began]. I got to be on several panels with Pamela Gay as well. Another oft seen but ne’er interacted with person was Starla Huchton. P.C. Panels I Sat On Friday was a fairly light day as I only had “Meeting Other Podcasters” in the Derby Room. Saturday was my biggest day for panels. Get your blog reviewed during #Blogchat – June. Thank You #BlogChat! « Dave Cutler's Blog. I am constantly astounded by the willingness of people I encounter via social media to help a complete stranger without the expectation of personal gain or even asking for reciprocity. Tom Martin, who was both generous with his time and forthcoming with his advice for me, said in a recent blog post that “Giving is the gateway to success.”

If that’s the case (and I believe it to be true), then the kind folks who participate in the #blogchat community are assured of having long and illustrious careers. A little background…. If you’re unfamiliar with #blogchat, I’d highly recommend that you read this “What is #blogchat?” Post by Mack Collier, the founder of the weekly chat. Last week, Mack wrote a blog post covering a new idea for #blogchat, in which people could submit their blog to be reviewed by the group.

The sheer volume of tweets that came through during the 15 minutes assigned to my blog’s review was incredibly overwhelming. So, where do we go from here? You're doing it wrong... UserVoice Blog. Trailblazers for Good. #BlogChat.
