The system uses 608 series "skateboard" ball bearings and standard hardware found at any home improvement store. Rails and legs can be made out of any 1" OD tubing or pipe (3/4" steel EMT is cheap and works well). Update Aug 16: Added motor mount and refined the overall design to improve fit for 3/4" EMT (previous version was too loose). Update Aug 21: Added rope pulley (fits 5mm motor shaft) and features on end block for attaching rope. Use this and a motor to pull the carriage along the rails. This short series of videos on YouTube posted to Instructables documents the construction of a motorized slider that could be easily adapted to handle cameras and rigs of much larger size. While there is no sound in any of these videos, the photographs and clips detailing its construction and use seem fairly self explanatory. As well as the two videos of clips above, two more videos show the construction as a series of stills, highlighting the details in the different sections. A shopping list is included, listing each of the components required to build the slider shown in the video, and while it may not actually be able to handle a DSLR, modifying the built to support such a weight should not be all that difficult.
