Learning without Boundaries, Sept. 17, 2015: New space brings new possibilities

The new school year brought smiles to students' faces as they walked into Cushing Elementary for the first time since construction began. The existing library media center and activity center have been completely transformed. Walls were torn down to create a large learning commons between the two rooms. New small breakout rooms have been added to allow for collaboration or a quiet spot to work. Tall shelving units have been replaced with shorter units on casters so students can reach the books and the learning spaces can easily be adjusted if the need arises.

One of the small breakout rooms is called the Digital Makerspace room, a space where learners can explore digital tools like video, animation, coding, robotics, electronics and more. The Digital Makerspace room just holds the digital makerspace items. Primary Chalkboard: Alternative Seating Classroom. Welcome to the Library! / Welcome. Some schools giving desks the boot. By Amy Hetzner of the Journal Sentinel Hartland - Concentration broken only by the soft whispers of student questions, the fifth-graders in Hartland South Elementary School teacher Holly Albrecht's class lounge on bean bags, perch on fabric cubes or lightly bounce on stability balls.

Some schools giving desks the boot

With the entire class studiously completing math tests, a couple of students choose to work at a table pushed to a corner during a redesign of Albrecht's classroom. But the room's sole desk goes abandoned. Just changing the furniture by removing almost all of the desks and most of the chairs in her classroom has brought about changes in her students, Albrecht said, aiding concentration and providing more flexibility for how they learn.

Other teachers in her school have taken notice and are planning changes of their own, budget allowing. Making Over an Existing Space: Barclay Elementary School - Ideas & Inspiration from Demco. Library Displays

We all know how boys love competition! She developed the '50 Book Challenge' and has been willing to let others use the idea in their schools. So, this year I am starting it here...I am running it basically the same as Bridget with a few adaptions for our school. The students sign up to the competition. Books must be at least 180 pages long and must be from the school library. My display shows our two top readers from last year - a year 9 and year 12 student who tied at 104 books each. Divine Design: How to create the 21st-century school library of your dreams

For starters, ebooks, apps, and the web are now a part of your students’ daily lives. So how do you determine the best way to turn your library space into a learning center that’s right for today’s rapidly changing digital world? Take it from me, a longtime designer of school libraries, it’s not easy. Things are looking up at P.S. 189, in Manhattan’s Washington Heights, where a flock of books (fabricated from sheet metal) soars beneath a digitally printed sky, turning florescent light fixtures into inspiring works of art. The libraries shown in this article are located in some of New York City’s poorest neighborhoods, and were created as part of an initiative by the Robin Hood Foundation-a leader in school library design-and the New York City Department of Education.
