PM - New national park proposal to save the Leadbeater's possum 13/08/2013

Professor David Lindenmayer of the ANU (Australian National University) says one thing that's absolutely essential is the creation of a new national park, protected from logging, in the mountain forests east of Melbourne. The animal's future has also been endangered by the huge bushfires of recent years. At a public meeting at Healesville last night, Professor Lindenmayer proposed a park from Kinglake through to the Baw Baws, and north-east up to Eildon. STAND BASAL AREA

Brack and Wood Stand Basal Area is a useful parameter for the forest mensurationist because it is relatively easily collected and can be related to many other parameters of interest (e.g. site density and stand volume). The internationally accepted symbol for stand basal area is G (m^2 ha^-1) and for tree basal area, g (m^2). G is an important reference variable for a stand and is particularly useful in quantitative description. G values commonly range from 10 to 60 m^2 ha^-1 in both coniferous and hardwood forests. 10175basalstandarea.pdf (application/pdf Object)

ECOS Magazine - Towards A Sustainable Future. Published: 11 December 2012 The largest living organisms on the planet, the big, old trees that harbour and sustain countless birds and other wildlife, are dying according to a report by three of the world’s leading ecologists in a recent issue of the journal Science.

ECOS Magazine - Towards A Sustainable Future

The report warns of an alarming increase in death rates among trees 100-300 years old in many of the world’s forests, woodlands, savannahs, farming areas and even in cities. ‘It’s a worldwide problem and appears to be happening in most types of forest,’ says lead author, Professor David Lindenmayer of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions (CEED) and Australian National University. ‘Large old trees are critical in many natural and human-dominated environments. ‘Research is urgently needed to identify the causes of rapid losses of large old trees and strategies for improved management. Sending Leadbeater’s Possum down the road to extinction

Clear-felling now loses large amounts of money for the state of Victoria, degrades the forest, erodes water catchment yields, increases fire risks, and is driving Leadbeater’s Possum - the state’s faunal emblem - to extinction. An alternative pathway is to reform (and significantly reduce) the loss-making pulpwood and timber industries, capitalise on the massive financial carbon values of these forests, maintain and then improve the water catchment values for Melbourne, and, in doing so, protect the globally endangered Leadbeater’s Possum.

Watchdogs failing on eco threats

THE state environment and primary industry departments are failing to act as proper watchdogs over potential environmental threats, a critical review by the Victorian Auditor-General has found. In an inquiry released yesterday, the Auditor-General says neither department has sufficient policies, systems, or monitoring in place to properly ensure people and industry are complying with Victoria's environment laws. The Department of Sustainability and Environment and Department of Primary Industries have a series of responsibilities under state law to protect the environment, such as ensuring plant and animal health, regulating the use of chemicals in agriculture, and overseeing the mining industry.

Issues arising from state environment laws being broken could include illegal logging, illegal duck hunting, and introduction of pest species, among numerous others, the Auditor-General's report says.
