Running in the Real World

When Taylor Bryson ran PRs at every distance from 800m to 5,000m in 2012, her final season at the University of California-Berkeley, she wasn't ready to hang up her spikes. But with a best of 16:05 for 5,000m, sponsors weren't knocking down her door. Bryson had to get creative if she was going to continue to train -- and support herself -- after her graduation in May 2012 with a degree in interdisciplinary studies. Today, Bryson rents a house in the Berkeley Hills with four former Cal teammates and trains with the Bay Area Track Club under coaches Tom Kloos and Magdalena Lewy Boulet. Bryson holds part-time jobs at AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill and as a baby sitter for a family in Oakland, all while continuing to train. Here's how a typical week of training and working unfolds for Bryson as she readies herself for the summer racing season.

After a week-long vote of fans, Bradley Athletics staff and local sports media, McMahon follows in the footsteps of 2010 and 2011 winner Mary Goldkamp by representing the women's cross country and track teams as the recipient of the 2012 Alumni B-Club Most Outstanding Female Athlete.

With Gaul as a repeat winner of the 2011 and 2012 Alumni B-Club Most Outstanding Male Athlete, a soccer player has won at least a share of the award in 10 of the last 14 years. McMahon, who earned Junior All-America honors earlier this year by finishing eighth in the USA Junior National Cross Country Championships, was one of 18 qualifiers for Saturday's 5,000-meter race. Oregon freshman Allison Woodward won the race in 16:15.27, while McMahon's 18:15.79 placed her in between two more Pac-12 runners: UCLA's Bronte Golick (18:07.53) was 11th and Stanford's Aimee Trujillo (18:18.73) was 14th. "We are really proud of Sarah," said Bradley cross country and track head coach Marc Burns.
