In August 2002, The Washingtonian magazine ran a damning story about Fannie Mae that demonstrates the political reach of the mortgage giant ... and forecasts the potential risk to taxpayers should Fannie Mae stumble. When Rep. Christopher Shays (R-CT) discovered in 2002 that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were the "only Fortune 500 companies that didn't have to tell the public about their financial condition," he teamed up with Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA) to try to "apply the government's disclosure rules to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. " They didn't succeed. But the story surrounding that quest is worth the 15 minutes it will take you to read the republished article. You really need to read this story if you still believe that there were no warning signs, that this catastrophic mess the President talked about Wednesday night somehow came from out of the blue, or that the entire mess lies on the shoulders of only one political party.

By 2005, Business Week called Fannie Mae CEO Franklin D. Fannie Mae Before the Meltdown: The View from August 2002 - News. Six years ago, a Washingtonian story issued an early warning about Fannie Mae. This article is from the August 2002 issue of The Washingtonian. Balancing Act Fannie Mae Projects a Happy Image. But as Its Debt Grows Bigger and Its Executives Get Richer, Should Taxpayers Start to Worry? By Ross Guberman Congressman Christopher Shays was lying in bed one night last March and told his wife he was about to take on a new battle. The next morning, before he talked to anyone else, his office got a call from Duane Duncan, Fannie Mae's chief lobbyist.

Another lobbyist approached Shays and said, "You're making a lot of people unhappy with this. " Shays, a Republican from Connecticut, knew Fannie's antennae stretched all over town, but he never expected that a few stray remarks would trigger such a reaction. "The more I look," Shays says, "the more convinced I am that they're not eager to disclose what they do. Shays broke a political rule in Washington: Don't mess with Fannie Mae.

Iron law of oligarchy. History[edit] In 1911 Robert Michels argued that paradoxically the socialist parties of Europe, despite their democratic ideology and provisions for mass participation, seemed to be dominated by their leaders, just like traditional conservative parties. Michels' conclusion was that the problem lay in the very nature of organizations. The more liberal and democratic modern era allowed the formation of organizations with innovative and revolutionary goals, but as such organizations become more complex, they became less and less democratic and revolutionary.

Michels formulated the "Iron Law of Oligarchy": "Who says organization, says oligarchy At the time Michels formulated his Law, he was an anarcho-syndicalist.[3] He later became an important ideologue of Benito Mussolini's fascist regime in Italy, teaching economics at the University of Perugia.[4][5] Reasons[edit] Michels stressed several factors that underlie the Iron Law of Oligarchy.

Implications[edit] Examples and exceptions[edit] Jura federation. Anarchists in the Jura federation, like James Guillaume, would play a key role in Peter Kropotkin's conversion to anarchism. In Memoirs of a Revolutionist, Kropotkin writes that "the egalitarian relations which I found in the Jura Mountains, the independence of thought and expression which I saw developing in the workers, and their unlimited devotion to the cause appealed far more strongly to my feelings; and when I came away from the mountains, after a week's stay with the watchmakers, my views upon socialism were settled.

I was an anarchist. Cults in politics | NAN publications | NAN. The book 'On the Edge: Political Cults Right and Left' by Dennis Tourish and Tim Wohlforth, August 2000, ISBN: 0-7656-0639-9, 256pp with bibliographic references, index. This is the first book to document the extent of political cults on both the right and left and explain their significance for mainstream political organisations. The authors outline the defining characteristics of cults in general, and analyse the degree to which a variety of well-known movements fall within the spectrum of cultic organizations.

The book covers such individuals and groups as Lyndon LaRouche, Fred Newman, Ted Grant, Marlene Dixon, the Christian Identity movement, Posse Commitatus, Aryan Nation, militias, and the Freemen. It explores the ideological underpinnings that predispose cult followers to cultic practices, along with the measures cults use to suppress dissent, achieve intense conformity, and extract extraordinary levels of commitment.

Politics cults. What if the SA is coming from your spouse? - Christian Recovery. I need some help. I've been married for 9 years and have 2 children. My husband within the last 2 years has become increasingly controlling and verbally and emotionally abusive. He is an ordained minister, although we do not have a church. The control and EA/ SA became heightened about 1.5 years ago when I started my own business. There was a women's conference that I had registered for and my husband said that if I went, I would be out of God's will b/c he (hubby) did not want me to go.

When I got back, the house was tense and the SA escalated to where my husband took my laptop and cracked it on our kitchen counter and broke it to pieces b/c I was not listening to him. (in front of our children). If there is anyone who can help me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks. Depression - How and When to Leave an Emotionally Abusive Relati. Emotional Abuse. Abusive Environments. EQI.org Home | Abuse | Society | Teen Prison Abusive Environments, Gypsies and Education Written by S. Hein in 2008 while living in Romania One way to know if a person is living in an abusive environment is to ask whether that person can leave when the environment becomes painful. Another question is whether the person can change the environment to make it less painful. Consider a slave. Also, can the slave change the environment by requesting that the master stop causing him pain? So the two basic issues are freedom and control. To survive, people who live in abusive environments and a) are not free to leave or b)do not have control over them must adapt to the abusive environment.

When I think of abusive environments, adapting (coping) and society from this perspective, a lot of things start to make sense. Being in Romania, learning about Gypsy families and the Orthodox church has helped me to more clearly see what an abusive environment is. The slaves did not receive any wages. 1. S. People who sleep on their stomachs have lower night time blood p. Yasuharu Tabara of Ehime University School of Medicine in Ehime, Japan, noted that high blood pressure during the night can increase the risk of a night time heart attack, reports Patient Health International. In the research, more than 270 healthy men ages 19 to 64 who were not taking blood pressure medication wore automatic blood pressure cuffs. They were first asked to lie down face up and later were told to turn over on their stomachs. In almost all the men, their overall blood pressure dropped significantly when they were face down.

And 25 of the men experienced an even more dramatic decrease of more than 15 points when they just turned over onto their stomachs. In addition, systolic blood pressure, which is the force blood exerts on the artery walls when the heart beats, fell by as much as 15 mmHg in response to moving into the prone position, compared with the supine position, reports Patient Health International.

Codependency For well over four years we have advertised at this site for someone willing to help write an article on codependency.

We got around a dozen responses, but that was it: just an initial response and then nothing. Symptoms of Codependency include overextending oneself and difficulty in following a project through. So, it soon became apparent that while we were going to get responses, we weren't really going to find anyone to help write this. We would have to do it alone. So, here goes: Codependency is a terrible term. Codependency is habitual behaviors that are ultimately self-destructive. Codependent behaviors can be stopped. The following are a list of symptoms. Symptoms Care taking: the codependent individual feels responsible for other people.

Low Self Worth: codependents tend to come from troubled, dysfunctional families, and will deny this to the very end. Repression: most codependents repress their own needs, their own desires. Nomani, a former colleague of the slain Daniel Pearl. Washington Post, via RCP: When dealing with a "disobedient wife," a Muslim man has a number of options. First, he should remind her of "the importance of following the instructions of the husband in Islam. " If that doesn't work, he can "leave the wife's bed. " Finally, he may "beat" her, though it must be without "hurting, breaking a bone, leaving blue or black marks on the body and avoiding hitting the face, at any cost.
