Autism and Abuse. An ability to identify people on the Spectrum presents one potential hazard -- abusers who stalk people with disabilities.

Autism and Abuse

Fortunately such abusers are rare. It is possible (and very easy) to protect oneself from abusers who stalk by being alert for warning signs of these people. ("The Spectrum" generally means the autism Spectrum, including Asperger's syndrome, HFA, PDD and Kanner's autism. Many of us are comfortable with the generic reference of "autistic".) Just Another Internet Scare Story. Posttraumatic stress disorder. Posttraumatic stress disorder[note 1] (PTSD) may develop after a person is exposed to one or more traumatic events, such as sexual assault, serious injury, or the threat of death.[1] The diagnosis may be given when a group of symptoms, such as disturbing recurring flashbacks, avoidance or numbing of memories of the event, and hyperarousal (high levels of anxiety) continue for more than a month after the traumatic event.[1] Most people having experienced a traumatizing event will not develop PTSD.[2] Women are more likely to experience higher impact events, and are also more likely to develop PTSD than men.[3] Children are less likely to experience PTSD after trauma than adults, especially if they are under ten years of age.[2] War veterans are commonly at risk to PTSD.

Posttraumatic stress disorder

Classification Posttraumatic stress disorder is classified as an anxiety disorder in the DSM iV; the characteristic symptoms are not present before exposure to the violently traumatic event. Causes Family violence. Burnout (psychology) Burnout is a psychological term that refers to long-term exhaustion and diminished interest in work.

Burnout (psychology)

Research indicates general practitioners have the highest proportion of burnout cases; according to a recent Dutch study in Psychological Reports,[citation needed] no less than 40% of these experienced high levels of burnout. Burnout is not a recognized disorder in the DSM[1] although it is recognized in the ICD-10[2] and specified as a "State of vital exhaustion" (Z73.0) under "Problems related to life-management difficulty" (Z73), but not considered a "disorder". Compassion fatigue.

Compassion fatigue, also known as secondary traumatic stress (STS), is a condition characterized by a gradual lessening of compassion over time.

Compassion fatigue

It is common among individuals that work directly with trauma victims such as nurses, psychologists, and first responders. It was first diagnosed in nurses in the 1950s. Sufferers can exhibit several symptoms including hopelessness, a decrease in experiences of pleasure, constant stress and anxiety, sleeplessness or nightmares, and a pervasive negative attitude. This can have detrimental effects on individuals, both professionally and personally, including a decrease in productivity, the inability to focus, and the development of new feelings of incompetency and self-doubt.[1][dead link] Journalism analysts argue that the media has caused widespread compassion fatigue in society by saturating newspapers and news shows with often decontextualized images and stories of tragedy and suffering.

These extensive renovations not only enhance living conditions and beautify exterior surroundings, but also ensure that APAH properties comply with building code, safety and environmental regulations. These upgrades also increase the tax assessment of the properties, thereby generating additional revenue to the County, which APAH pays in property taxes. Depression affects how women with PMDD respond to stress, pain. A severe mood disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, affects 5 percent to 7 percent of all women of reproductive age in the United States, but it is often misdiagnosed as major depression or other mood disorder.

A recent study further establishes that PMDD is biologically different, and that women with PMDD who have experienced depression could make up a subset. The findings are important because they give physicians more reason to search for a more specific diagnosis and could possibly lead to more precise treatments, of which there are currently few good choices, said Susan Girdler, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine who led the study. "PMDD is not garden-variety premenstrual symptoms.
