Abu Dhabi était l’un des grands investisseurs du groupe bancaire depuis octobre 2008, après avoir répondu aux appels de John Varley, directeur général de Barclays, qui avait préféré opter pour une recapitalisation par des fonds privés plutôt que de recevoir l’aide du gouvernement, ce qui aurait entrainé la nationalisation du groupe. Une opération stratégique de la part d’IPIC Dans l’opération, le fonds émirati devrait réaliser une plus-value de 1,5 milliard de livres. En effet, depuis que Barclays avait annoncé vouloir vendre des actifs il y a 7 mois, le cours de l’action avait été multiplié par plus de 5. La vente de ces titres sera réinvestie dans le secteur des hydrocarbures, répondant à la stratégie d’investissement à long terme d’IPIC.
