How communities of practice give us access to observing, orienting, deciding, and acting in a world of practice. Happy Corner, where the tailors studied by Jean Lave (2011) worked in the 1970′s, was a remarkable community of practice. The community provided resources an individual couldn’t afford like sewing machines or cutting tables, real-time help making or verifying calculations, opportunities to groom reputations or gossip, partners for more difficult projects, and enough competition to keep everyone on their toes in an evolving economy. The apprentices in the community become master tailors and then took on apprentices themselves. In a world where education steadily narrows down (to teach to the test, in the name of efficiency), there’s a lot we can learn from that tailor’s community: work and community were not separate, work and learning happened in the normal course of the day, without separating work or learning from the larger world.
Here’s a collection of news and tidbits from CPsquare: the Foundations workshop schedule, social artistry, and hacking versus stacking. Our long-running (almost venerable but still fresh) Foundations of Communities of Practice workshop is running two times this year. It starts next on April 9th and later in the year starting on October 22. If you or someone you know is interested in a deeper understanding of communities of practice, please register or get in touch now! Social artistry In a way, social artistry has been at the very core of our conversations, conferences, and workshops at CPsquare for the past 10 years.
A gem from Alan Levine. I’m nodding in total agreement. “Nuff said. “I fully buy into the idea that small acts of regular creativity is not only good practice, but good for the soul. I have no proof, just my own case study.”
« Comment construire et animer une communauté en ligne ? » Telle est la question qui m’est posée de façon récurrente depuis bientôt six mois par la plupart des entreprises pour lesquelles j’interviens.
