Origins and Relationships. By Dave Hone How can palaeontologists reconstruct the relationships between animals that lived tens of millions of years ago? How can we tell who is closely related to whom, and what that means for how they evolved?

In the modern world of genetics, it may seem odd that we can do these kinds of analyses, but long before we had the technology to compare the DNA of living species biologists and palaeontologists had been using cladistics (the technique used to determine relationships) based upon anatomy. Of course we hardly have whole animals to work with, but there is a surprising amount of information to be gained from bones – their shape and structure can tell us huge amounts about how these animals lived, and can reveal their evolutionary history.

Cladistics – determining relationships. Cladistics works by comparing numerous fine details between large numbers of organisms, be it trees, insects or pterosaurs. We can look at their DNA, bones, muscles, physiology and much more. Conclusions: THE 1990s - How To Build a Dinosaur could have been titled How Not To Make a Dinosaur Video, produced at the start of the 1990s and released by Mazon Marketing. It is a half hour children's video but did we need so much footage of Milwaukee Public Museum's Rolf Johnson - dressed like Indiana Jones - singing into a dinosaur "microbone" and singing animated allosaur and camarasaur skull graphics? The intended focus was on how to restore Torosaurus, and John Ostrom, Paul Sereno and Peter Dodson all make appearances, seemingly unaware of their pariticipation in such a silly video.

A work in progress, the final mount of Torosaurus is never properly presented. Johnson tries to justify a slightly sprawled reptilian position for the forelimbs, yet in situ fossil discoveries (i.e. Triceratops "Raymond" in the 1990s) have always indicated upright posture. Not to be confused with the 1985 program, Arts and Entertainment Network/Granada Television’s Dinosaur! ‘T. Reptiles.

Lanzendorf PaleoArt Prize was created to recognize outstanding achievement in paleontological scientific illustration and naturalistic art.

These are the only art awards presented by the scientific community that specifically recognize accomplishments in paleontological visualization. PaleoArt is broadly defined as the scientific or naturalistic rendering of paleontological subject matter pertaining to vertebrate fossils. PaleoArt is one of the most important vehicles for communicating discoveries and data among Paleontologists, and is critical to promulgating Vertebrate Paleontology across disciplines and to lay audiences. Categories Scientific Illustration: works that are regarded as text-figures within the body of a scientific paper or as online supplementary material.

Eligibilty Requirements Submissions are limited to two examples of work completed by an artist or studio within the last two years that have not been previously submitted for the Lanzendorf Paleoart Prize. The Dinosaur Toy Forum: Version 1 Archive - Sculpting/ Molding/ Casting Tutorial Thread. With this thread I will try to impart onto those interested my methods for sculpting, molding and casting. I am not trying to give every little detail here- just a general ovrview of the process. I will use one of my dino sculpts as an example project. First what I do when I am going to sculpt any animal whether it is modern or prehistoric is to do research to find any and all information i can regarding that animal.

I use google image search and I go to my library to get books with photos. I try to find a good as near perfect side view of the animal to use as my starting point. I enlarge or scale it to the size required. Next I start to apply my clay to the cardboard armature. Once the initial anchor layer of clay is complete, I start to add the clay in larger pieces, attaching them into the anchor layer, smearing these additions into the anchor layer , building up the bulk of the animal, roughing in the basic form. Mammoth Home Page. Pterosaur Wings. Pterosaur wing origins It has been said that pterosaurs appeared suddenly in the fossil record with no apparent precursors. Unfortunately, this is the belief of those who still believe pterosaurs are archosaurs. No series of archosaurs has ever been put forth that demonstrates a gradual evolution of pterosaurian characters, hence the paradigm mentioned above.

Lepdiosaurian fenestrasaurs (Peters 2000, 2009) do demonstrate a gradual evolution of pterosaurian characters, no matter which characters one chooses. Here the forelimb is transformed into a wing using a series of lepidosaurs. 1.7 Illustrates the basal lepidosaur, Sphenodon. 1.1 Illustrates the basal squamate Huehuecuetzpalli. 1.2 Illustrates the basal fenestrasaur, Cosesaurus. 1.3 Illustrates Sharovipteryx. 1.4 Illustrates Longisquama. 1.5 and 1.6 Ilustrate the derived fenestrasaur and basal pterosaur, MPUM 6009. Perhaps the Propatagium IS the Longus Metacarpal Extensor in Pterosaurs | The Pterosaur Heresies. Flexion and Extension in Pterosaur Wings Workers have been looking for evidence of a wing finger extensor muscle/tendon in pterosaurs without much success. For some the longus metacarpal extensor would be the most likely wing finger extensor in pterosaurs. The flexor digitorum longus has been promoted as the most likely wing finger flexor in pterosaurs.

Both of these muscles originate on the distal humerus in most tetrapods and terminate on the proximal phalanges. Today we’ll look at Bennett’s (2008) restoration of pterosaur wing muscles, then examine Prondvai and Hone’s (2009) search for an automatic extensor system. Figure 1. Pterosaur wing muscles and tendons according to Bennett (2008) FDL and FCU are the digit flexors transformed to become wing extensors. Bennett (2008) Flips Things Around The above soft tissue restoration by Bennett (2008, Fig. 1) is based on several strange morphological changes that would have made pterosaurs different than all other tetrapods. This is an incomplete list of historically known extinct mammals, their dates of extinction, and former range. Mammals included are organisms which have been described by science, but which have subsequently become extinct. Many of these animals have become extinct as a result of human hunting, for food or sport, or through the destruction of habitat.

Dinosaur Information - Planet Dinosaur. 2000s-10s - With virtually every major paleoartist as a pre-production advisor, Disney's anthromorphized 'Dinosaur' proved to be the biggest prehistoric blockbuster since 'Jurassic Park' at the top of the new millenia. 'Walking With Dinosaurs' became the most watched science documentary in Britain (not to mention most expensive ever made).

Followed by various sequels, promotional merchandise and toy line, WWD achieved another successful spawn with a Live Experience traveling show that continued to tour into 2010. Japanese toymakers in lines such as Kaiyodo's Dinotales and Favorite Co.'s various desktop models, set a precedent for accuracy. With over a century of paleontological illustrations, and the last thirty years packed with active scenes, it seemed there was no new dinosaur behavior to show, only new techniques to show it.
