Set at the edge of the road along the beach of the ancient island of Kauai, the tiny village was home to restless souls longing to escape from the unrest of their generation, from the traumas of the Vietnam War, the Kennedy and Martin Luther King assassinations.
Wehrheim arrived in Kauai in 1971 at the age of twenty-three, bearing only a bag, a surfboard, and a bong. When he first ventured into the camp, the photographer was met with a degree of suspicion. People came to Taylor Camp in search of an existence sequestered from the violence that dominated mainstream media and life. On a tous en tête ses photos de fleurs et de pénis: Man in a polyester suit par exemple: le portrait d’une bite noire qui sort de la braguette d’un mec en costard dont on ne voit pas le visage; ses photos de mecs, de pratiques et d’accessoires SM et son fameux autoportrait où on le voit de dos, en chaps, se rentrer un manche de fouet dans le cul et nous lancer un regard bien acéré par dessus l’épaule. Avedon knew that Kissinger was trying to manipulate him, but what, exactly, did he want? “Did Kissinger want to look wiser, warmer, more sincere than he suspected he was?” Avedon wrote later. “Isn’t it trivializing and demeaning to make someone look wise, noble (which is easy to do), or even conventionally beautiful when the thing itself is so much more complicated, contradictory, and, therefore, fascinating?”
