Untitled. Edinburgh itineraries. Morning One thing you quickly notice is that Edinburgh is hilly: great for views, tough on the legs. While you’re still fresh, head up to Edinburgh Castle (1) (edinburghcastle.gov.uk; adult £15, child £8.50), which looms over the city like a benevolent presence. Built on an extinct volcano, this is both a fortress and royal palace. Highlights include the “Honours of Scotland” (the UK’s oldest royal regalia), the mighty Mons Meg cannon (capable of firing a ball over two miles), the Stone of Destiny coronation seat, and the Great Hall’s hammerbeam roof. Join one of the free guided tours. Afterwards, head down the Royal Mile, past the 16th- and 17th-century tenement buildings (now bursting with jolly, tartan-filled tourist shops) to the Palace of Holyroodhouse (2), the current royal residence, opposite the striking-looking Scottish Parliament building (scottish.parliament.uk).
