Boulder admits to downtown surveillance program - Boulder Daily Camera. By Erica Meltzer, Camera Staff Writer Posted: 02/13/2014 05:11:34 PM MST | Updated: about a year ago Boulder has installed three cameras on the municipal campus and has been continuously videotaping the area between the municipal building and the Main Public Library and the area to the east of the municipal building since the beginning of the year. Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner agreed to discuss the cameras after the Camera filed a public records request in response to an accidental mention of them at a City Council meeting Tuesday. Beckner said Thursday that the three cameras were installed the week of Jan. 6 in response to an increase in reports of criminal activity on the municipal campus, especially the lawn area between the municipal building and the library.

The cameras, which cost $8,000, including installation, cover the area between the library and the city building and the area east of the city building, including a small portion of Central Park.

States Don’t Have to Comply: The Anti-Comandeering Doctrine. Most Americans believe that the federal government stands absolutely supreme. Nobody can question its dictates. Nobody can refuse its edicts. Nobody can resist its commands. This is simply not true. Laws passed in pursuance of the Constitution do stand as the supreme law of the land. But that doesn’t in any way imply the federal government lords over everything and everybody in America. First off, as James Madison asserted in Federalist 45, the powers of the federal government are “few and defined.” Second, even within those areas that the federal government does exercise authority, it cannot force state or local governments to cooperate in enforcement or implementation.

Simply put, the federal government cannot force state or local governments to act against their will. This is known as the anti-commandeering doctrine, and it is well established in constitutional jurisprudence. In Prigg v. Sandra Day O’Connor wrote for the majority in the 6-3 decision. She later expounded on this point. African American Odyssey: Abolition, Anti-Slavery Movements, and the Rise of the Sectional Controversy (Part 2)

Trapwire Stratfor Email 4. Confirmed: New Nationwide "Trapwire" Surveillance System Is Actively Recording, Monitoring Everything. If you didn’t believe that everything you do is monitored before today, this latest confirmation should seal the deal. The information, of course, was not officially released, but when hackers gained access to highly secure emails at global analysis firm Stratfor earlier this year the cat came out of the bag. With New York recently launching an all-seeing domestic awareness system, many Americans who don’t live in Mayor Bloomberg’s police state believe they are safe from the watchful eye of Big Brother. Thing again: The Trapwire system is actively monitoring every major city in the country.

Every one of them is recording and transferring what they capture to a centralized database – this includes your location, license plate, and facial identification. Naturally, the Trapwire organization, in a recent press release, touts their new surveillance infrastructure as being focused solely on potential terrorist activity and in no way violative of your sensitive personal information :

The NY Times recently revealed that an astounding 1.3 million law enforcement demands were made to cell phone carriers last year alone. The telecom and technology sectors record and store Americans’ text messages, emails, the data they store online, social site user info, internet activity, and cell phone subscriber whereabouts (via cellular GPS technology), and hand this data over to government agencies with alarming regularity. Private citizens used to be deemed ‘off-limits’ to law enforcement surveillance, unless a judge could be convinced to grant a warrant. James Bridle has created a wearable device he’s dubbed the ‘surveillance spaulder’ -- inspired by the spaulder, a medieval plate armor used to protect “the wearer from unexpected and unseen blows from above.” The surveillance spaulder alerts the wearer to surveillance camera presence by detecting the infrared lighting they commonly use. Upon discovering a camera in its vicinity, the device sends an electric signal to two “transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation” pads that cause the wearer of the device to twitch.

Bridle’s invention is among a growing number of surveillance detecting devices that straddle the line between functional technology and political statement. Will Obama Attempt to Co-Opt the Software Companies? Of late, Keith Alexander has added a new thing to his public schtick: inviting tech companies to come up with a way to dragnet more effectively. In the middle of discussions of why NSA must retain the phone dragnet, he’ll stop, and say, if the tech companies can come up with a way to do it better (not just to do the same thing as effectively, mind you, but better), he wants to hear it. At a minimum, that new schtick should alert you that in 2011 when they “ended” the Internet dragnet, they didn’t end it, they just found a way to do it better, because that’s how Alexander speaks of that decision in this context.

But you might also keep this shift in Alexander’s schtick in mind as you read Matthew Aid’s story about how the President whitewash became a graywash. At the same time, the agency’s once harmonious relationship with this country’s largest high-tech companies, such as Microsoft, Google and Yahoo, is now a shattered smoking ruin, NSA officials fret. Exclusive: How DC police use citizens as spies. Of the dozens of private intelligence corporations that have emerged in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, one firm has been singled out for particular scrutiny: TrapWire. The Virginia-based spy outfit founded by several former CIA employees a decade ago developed, it says, surveillance software that can root out terrorist attacks while they are in the planning stage. The company, formerly known as Abraxas Corp., markets its technology to local law enforcement, federal agencies and private corporations. TrapWire has been installed in 65 locations around the United States, according to the company’s website, including Washington, D.C., where it is being used by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

But TrapWire has become a lightning rod for civil libertarian groups and other critics who see its technology — and law enforcement’s hunger for it — as a symptom of a creeping surveillance state in the age of the so-called war on terrorism. “Americans aren’t stupid. Impeach Obama for NSA Spying Program?

A mountain of leaked emails, more than five million, remains to be explored. WhoWhatWhy’s Douglas Lucas—shown here in the video—is one of the few forensic journalists who’s been picking his way through these emails, all of which came from the private intelligence firm, Stratfor. Another reveals Drug Enforcement Administration plans to kill “narcoterrorists” in Mexico. Lucas was interviewed by Jeff Durkin of We Are Change Connecticut outside the New York City courtroom where, on November 15, hacktivist Jeremy Hammond was sentenced to ten years in prison for, among other things, providing Stratfor emails to WikiLeaks. 351Reddit 2Google + 'Stealth DHS Spy Grid' [Lee Ann McAdoo @ INFOWARS Nightly News] English News Today - TrapWire: American cities under total surveillance?

It's one thing to have single actions out of context being watched by various people, it's quite another to have every action watched by a handful of people.
