Citizen journalism is ordinary people reporting and sharing information. Citizen journalism is exactly what it sounds like. With the increase availability to the Internet, everyone can be a journalist.

It doesn’t have to be just paragraphs of text either; the information can take form of pictures, audio, or video. Many podcasts and blogs are updated throughout the week with new story lines and news. Viewers can subscribe to blogs of their choice and keep up to date with information that is relevant to their interests. Some news corporations are supporting citizen journalism. NBC News is a corporation that supports the growth of citizen journalism. Social media is one of the domains for citizen journalism. According to TheGuardian, a British news website, social media and citizen journalism is not only affecting the news corporations, but the documentary makers as well.

Overall, citizen journalism has changed to become a major part of news. Does Citizen Journalism Foster or Impede Law Enforcement? Back in August, a shooting in Times Square made headlines: NYPD approached a 51-year-old man who was reportedly smoking marijuana in public, and after being approached, the man brandished a kitchen knife with a six-inch blade. After police followed the man for seven blocks, ordering him to drop the knife, they fatally shot him. And the issue has resurfaced months later, given that many photos and videos of the incident taken by bystanders can be found online.

As mashable.com reports, the tendency to record everything can "lead to sticky conflicts between police and the people they are sworn to protect and serve. " And things become further complicated by the viral speed and ease of technology. Though laws vary by state, most say it is okay to record an on-duty officer as long as it doesn’t physically interfere with the officer. And last May, the U.S. Department of Justice reprimanded the Baltimore Police Department for insufficiently supporting citizens’ right to record officers on duty. Journal seeking citizen journalists.

Staff Reports Albany, Ga - Have you ever dreamed about being a journalist? Did you watch All the President’s Men and wonder if you could do that? Well, The Albany Journal is announcing that you can! “My background is as a citizen journalist, a blogger specifically. A lot of people want to write, but they don’t want to run a blog necessarily. What are those folks supposed to do?” Asked Journal publisher Tom Knighton. The initiative, as Knighton describes it, is about giving the citizens of Southwest Georgia an opportunity to see the stories that matter to them in print.

Knighton says that while this is open to anyone who wants to write a story, he doesn’t feel that this will reduce journalistic quality in the region. In addition to objectivity, Knighton says that the writing should adhere to the basic rules of grammar, using correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Will this lead to other opportunities for those who submit regularly? Brazil: Citizen Journalists Expose City’s Unfinished Works.

[All links lead to Portuguese language pages except when otherwise stated.] Citizen journalists in a small Brazilian city ignored by the country's mainstream media have shed light on the failure of its local government, marred by a legacy of administrative wrongdoing and poor accountability, to complete public works projects on time. Project Amigos de Januária [Friends of Januária], a 2011 Rising Voices grantee [en], has worked to keep the government of Januária [en], a city of 65,000 residents in the northern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, honest since 2004. With a newly elected mayor and other local representatives assuming their roles on January 1, 2013, the citizen journalism outfit has recently reported on several city projects, including the construction of a sports complex, pavement repairs, and renovations to river docks, that the previous administration has left unfinished.

Us - Pitch: Inside Citizen Journalism in Gaza and the West Bank. In May 2012, residents of the West Bank village of Aseera al-Qibliya captured footage of settlers using live fire during a skirmish with Arab villagers. At least one villager was injured. The video cameras used to capture the violence were part of a batch of cameras given out to residents by a left-wing advocacy organization. The footage was extremely shaky and didn't show the moment when the guns were fired, prompting the Israeli Defense Force to downplay its seriousness by saying it did "not reflect the incident in its entirety. " The video was posted on the Internet and shown by numerous international news outlets. My piece will examine who the citizen journalists of Gaza and the West Bank are, how and where they get equipment and training, and what outside organizations (if any) back and support their work. In-person and telephone interviews, background research, on-site reporting, photography, and video will be used to capture the story.

The rise of citizen journalism | Media. In a digital world with a whole host of different ways to communicate a factual message it is increasingly hard to judge the value of amateur eyewitness film shot on a mobile phone and posted on the internet against a considered, observational documentary broadcast on a traditional television channel. From the Occupy New York City bloggers, such as Tim Pool who has broadcast hours and hours of live reports from Zucotti Park in the city, to YouTube videos of citizens under fire from government forces in Syria – these incidents and more are changing the landscape of documentary filmmaking.

This has been made possible by the technology they use, the distribution platforms that are now available and the passion of ordinary men and women to tell the kinds of extraordinary stories that were once the domain of professional documentary makers. Factual filmmaking has in some senses become hostage to these new, "immediate" technologies. Police Tape: The Android App Every Citizen Journalist Should Own. Journalism Edition. The past few weeks have seen promising developments in the use of online journalism to counter official narratives in countries under political upheaval. The Network for Iraqi Reporters for Investigative Journalism launched in mid-June, becoming the first investigative journalism website in Iraq devoted to stories of “corruption, mismanagement of funds and power across Iraq.”

Its articles will be published in Arabic, English and Kurdish. Syrian video activists have also launched an effort to create an online alternative to state-run media. Independent websites have also played an important role in covering the Mexican presidential election, which took place on July 1, as an alternative to the mainstream media which have been accused of favoring the front-runner candidate Enrique Peña Nieto. Citizen Journalism – More Powerful Than We Realize. Web 2.0 has ushered in a number of concepts that are going to change society more than we now understand.

I am confident that 100 years from now, we will look at this time in the same way we now think of the 1400’s and the Guttenberg press. Social tools are connecting people and organizations in immersive ways and the fruits of those connections are setting a new bar for the impact on our lives. The latest to spur a lot of debate has been the KONY 2012 viral video and its effort to make the world aware of an African war criminal that just happens to be number one on the international most wanted list. If you have not seen the video about Joseph Kony yet, here is a link. We call the ability for regular (non media) people to deliver “news” to the world, Citizen Journalism.

And the Olympics buzz is not just on traditional media channels. Last month the BBC's sports editor David Bond spoke to Journalism.co.uk about the role social media is likely to play in both news gathering and reporting, and the considerations the broadcaster is having to make as a result. "Twitter has just changed everything," he said at the time. For one network of citizen journalists, known as #media2012, the massive demand for content related to the Olympics has opened up a window of opportunity to provide a new news provider outside the mainstream, committed to reporting on the "other dimensions" of the games. The predicted impact of social media, as Bond highlighted Bond earlier, will be part of #media2012's strength. Sunlight Weekly Roundup: Citizen journalist removed from public meeting.

Citizen-journalists > Margin Lines. Citizen journalism was critical in the Arab Spring over the past year as ordinary people used Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and other social media to push new ideas, organize protests, and document the atrocities of long entrenched dictatorships. Now they’re getting a more formal outlet with the start up of CitJo, a portal that will connect bloggers and videographers with official media agencies around the world.

While this hasn’t gotten much notice outside the Middle East, it is an innovative approach to a question that remains unresolved in the West (try asking the New York City Police Department who is a journalist). The portal will allow citizen journalists to sell their work under a variety of copyright licenses, giving some of them a potential revenue stream. According to Mahamad El Tanahy, Managing Director of CitJo, Our aim is to provide an easy way for citizen journalists to get their word out and generate revenue. It’s a fascinating experiment. World Press Freedom Day: Where We Stand After the Arab Spring. This post is co-authored by Jillian C. York. Nineteen years ago, before the Internet had reached millions of homes, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the celebration of press freedom, deeming May 3 “World Press Freedom Day.” Since then, the day has been celebrated by organizations and government entities alike.

Today, the Internet age has created a whole new slew of concerns about press freedom. Shifting Sands A year after the start of the Arab Spring and the subsequent spark of social movements throughout the world, it remains a turbulent time for press freedom. Following the ouster of Ben Ali, Tunisia quickly made strides toward a free press and open Internet, unblocking websites and allowing journalists to operate freely. But even as Tunisia’s revolution has marked a new era of openness, just a little more than a year later, there’s once again talk of censorship.

In post-Hosni Mubarak Egypt, the situation is also shaky. The Internet Promotes Freedom The Fragile First Amendment. Mobile App 'Signal' Encourages Citizen Journalism. Citizen journalism has been growing in popularity. News often breaks via social media. Traditional media outlets are incorporating social media into their reporting efforts, and some even have dedicated areas for citizen journalist.

A Lebanese entrepreneur is taking the concept a step further with his new mobile app, Signal. News by the People In the last few years, events from ranting airline employees to the shocking self-immolation of a man protesting social injustice in Tunsia were not reported first by major news outlets. This rise in citizen journalism is what prompted Mark Malkoun to create Signal, a mobile app that allows anyone to upload a photo or short headline and share it with the public instantly.

To report an event, users capture media, upload the content tagged with their location and add a short headline. Signal display stories based on user location, most votes or latest submissions; users can also filter top (most votes) news by continent or country. Sixth citizen journalist killed by Syrian government this year. Reporters Without Borders is horrified to have learned of the death three days ago of the Syrian citizen journalist Abdul Ghani Kaakeh who was deliberately targeted during a demonstration in the Salah Al-Din district of the northwestern city of Aleppo.

“We strongly condemn this murder, which illustrates the extent to which the government of Bashar al-Assad is ignoring the provisions of the ceasefire plan of the former UN secretary-general, Kofi Annan,” the press freedom organization said. “The name of Abdul Ghani Kaakeh has swollen the ranks of those whose efforts to inform the world about what is happening in Syria has cost them their lives.

We should like to offer our sincerest condolences to his family and friends.” The citizen journalist was hit in the neck by a bullet while he was filming the Aleppo protest. He was reported to have been deliberately targeted by the Syrian security forces, who had ordered him to stop filming moments before he was shot. Citizen Journalism: Will Asia Get the Signal? Last week, I read about Signal, an iPhone app designed to facilitate citizen journalism, on Mashable.

I don’t have an iPhone, but it sounded pretty cool, so I sent the team an email with some questions about its Asia plans, and Mark Malkoun, the man behind Signal, replied. Basically, the app allows users to share pictures and captions instantly, and geotagged. The idea is to share interesting news stories, and users can also add to local stories that have already been posted if they’re in the same location. Malkoun described it thusly: “As a viewer you can see everything happening in any location of the world sorted by importance or time. If you happen to see something happening nearby within the app, you could also contribute by adding pictures yourself.” I asked him about the inspiration for this app, and whether he was hoping it might have an impact on the freedom of information in countries where the press isn’t entirely free. Can we expect Signal in Asia anytime soon? Speak Out Tunisia: Training Citizen Journalists For A Free And Fair Press. Condemns attacks against Honduran journalists.
