Part of BMW’s Project i, now known as BMW i, all new i8 Spyder Concept is lighter and faster than the 2+2 seater variant which was revealed last year globally and also featured itself in the Tom Cruise starrer Hollywood flick, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. BMW i8 Spyder’s combined output (petrol and electric) stands at 354 bhp and 550 Nm torque. 1.5L turbocharged 3 cylinder petrol engine delivers a maximum output of 223 bhp via rear wheels while 96 kW electric motor delivers 131 bhp to the front wheels. In recognition of the fact that lightweighting is a key strategy in auto industry efforts to produce more fuel-efficient cars, the Center for Automotive Research (CAR, Ann Arbor, Mich.) has launched the Coalition of Automotive Lightweighting Materials (CALM), a new effort to accelerate the development of mixed material solutions that will reduce vehicle weight.
