July 16, 2012 Is it possible to find work-life balance as an entrepreneur? The answer is yes and no. In its first few years, your business owns you. Like a newborn, it demands all your time and effort to survive. Since breaking even usually takes 18 to 36 months, you usually begin to see daylight around year four. Focus on being present, wherever you are. Use the "5 before 11 a.m. " principle. Take essential business trips only.

Treat your family as if it’s your number-one client. Do special things for your spouse and kids on work time. Engage your family in your business. People often live by the saying: if you want to get something done right, you need to do it yourself. While I have heard people toss this phrase around like a badge of honor, there is no philosophy more toxic for an organization, especially small businesses.

Businesses of any size are complex and it is unrealistic to think that a small number of individuals will have all of the necessary expertise. So how do you determine where to focus your attention? To illustrate an example of what not to do, let’s take a look at how I used to run my own business. When sales were slow, I would put all of my energy into selling. Once the sales pipeline was full, I would then focus 100 percent of my time conducting speeches and advising clients. This meant, of course, that my sales pipeline would eventually dry up and I would need to refocus on selling once again. This is what happens when you do everything yourself. The result gives you seven different targeting strategies:

Your Will To Succeed — The Most Important Character Trait As An Entrepreneur » Company Founder. In my consulting and coaching practice, I have the good fortune to interact with a lot of top entrepreneurs, CEOs and athletes. I’m in a particularly intense period of such interaction right now, as I’m in the thick of research for a book I’m writing on peak performance and what it takes to be “great” at anything. My coaching, research and consulting look at many factors that impact peak performance on an individual and organizational level. Even though we look at a wide range of factors, there is one factor that always stands out in successful individuals and organizations: the will to succeed.

Given the complexities of talking about this factor as it relates to teams and organizations, I will focus here on the will to succeed on an individual level. In talking and working with top performers in business and sports, we cover a wide range of factors including: natural ability, clear goals, preparation, belief and the will to succeed, among many others.

Success on the social web? It all boils down to this. Do you want to look like a genius at your company? Walk into a meeting and say, “Future Internet Marketing success all boils down to one thing: Creativity.” If they ask you why, tell them I told you to say this. Then they will say “Who the hell is that?” And it will probably go downhill from there. Nevertheless, if you do make this statement, you will be right because something incredible is about to happen. We’ve spent the past few years establishing a technological foundation and distributing smart mobile devices (I am including iPad in this category) and we have now reached critical mass. At the same time, the cost of developing and distributing content has plummeted. Have you tried this stupid little game called Angry Birds?

By the way, this game cost $100,000 to develop and has brought in $10 million in revenue, one 99-cent download at a time. How do you capitalize on this? Take a moment to read the signs. While no single sign here guarantees failure, any one of them will certainly make success in business much more difficult than it already is. The good news, however, is even if you see yourself in this list, you can overcome any of these traits and rewrite your signs. The essential requirement is to be honest with yourself. 1. Making decisions doesn't mean you need to make every single decision (that's what we call micromanaging), that you have to deliberate for hours over the ones you do make (that's what we call procrastinating), or that you have to make decisions following a certain procedure or managerial methodology.
