An Introvert Offline is an Introvert Online. I have been ever-so-gently chided for not posting more often. Guilty . I've been busy, and because I have no deadlines here, it just fell off the schedule. But something else is at play, too, and it's very introvertish: I've had nothing in particular to say, and don't like yammering.

We've covered a lot of territory here since my first post, in August 2009. I've had my say, you've had yours, back and forth--I needed to stop and think before continuing the conversation. Just like in real life, I try not to blather. It's funny how consistent we are between the real and virtual worlds. In many ways, computer-mediated communication--texting, blogging , Facebook--is a godsend for introverts .

Some (many?) The doomsday scenario about computer-mediated communication is that people will use it to replace face-to-face interaction. By the end of a workday, FB voices start giving me the same kind of tiredhead I get at a party or after a stretch of face-to-face social engagements. To sleep less and dream more --- Gabriel Garcia Marquez. If for a moment God were to forget that I am a rag doll and granted me a piece of life, I probably wouldn't say everything that I think; rather, I would think about everything that I say. I would value things, not for their worth but for what they mean. I would sleep less, dream more, understanding that for each minute we close our eyes, we lose sixty seconds of light.

I would walk when others hold back, I would wake when others sleep, I would listen when others talk. And how I would enjoy a good chocolate ice cream! If God were to give me a piece of life, I would dress simply, throw myself face first into the sun, baring not only my body but also my soul. My God, if I had a heart, I would write my hate on ice, and wait for the sun to show. I would water roses with my tears, to feel the pain of their thorns and the red kiss of their petals... I would convince each woman and each man that they are my favorites, and I would live in love with love. So much have I learned from you, oh men ... Pocket Change. This is 126 Sterling Place in Park Slope. Most likely, you’ve never paid much attention to it… …and if you have, chances are you haven’t noticed the that the bricks on the upper levels don’t match the rest of the building.

While it might seem like a trivial detail, this is pretty much the only clue that the area once played a role in one of the worst airplane disasters in history. On December 16, 1960, two commercial airliners collided in mid-air over Staten Island. One plane crashed into Staten Island; the other, in Park Slope, Brooklyn, with much of the wreckage landing at the intersection of Sterling Place and Seventh Avenue. This is the above picture recreated today. Of the 128 passengers and crew members aboard the two flights, all were killed save for one young boy: 10 year old Stephen Baltz of Wilmette, Illinois. Stephen was traveling alone to meet his mother and sister, who had flown in the previous day. Stephen was conscious, and was briefly interviewed by rescuers.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world, Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people, Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law, Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations, Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms, Article 1.

Article 2. Article 3. The saddest bear of all.
