First Listen: Willie Nelson, 'Summertime' Willie Nelson's new album, Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin, comes out Feb. 26. Courtesy of the artist hide caption toggle caption Courtesy of the artist Willie Nelson's new album, Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin, comes out Feb. 26. Courtesy of the artist Every time Rod Stewart, Linda Ronstadt, Carly Simon or even Bob Dylan have done a standards album, maybe they should have had to pay a small royalty to Willie Nelson. The last song on Stardust was George and Ira Gershwin's "Someone To Watch Over Me," and 38 years later, he revives that revival on Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin. This applies even to the straight ballads.

Nelson does "put on some speed" in plenty of the new album's tracks, adopting a style that nearly approaches the light-footedness of Western swing, though there's nary a moment you'd mistake for straight country.

The idea makes a certain, if audacious, kind of sense. The eye-swivels of REM don't tell us anything about what the brain thinks it sees; they go only up, down, and side to side, like a robotic appendage—directional but senseless.

But the vibrations of the inner ear, theoretically, could be an entirely different matter: If the nerve endings were found to fire in response to specific, dreamed sounds—the bark of a dog, say, or the tolling of church bells—then each of those sounds could leave a fingerprint in the form of frequency, wavelength, and amplitude. To test his theory, Hayman took his custom-fit sensors—pressure-strain gauges that were inserted into the inner ear, which created encephalograph readings of MEMA phenomena—and outfitted them with microscopic microphones. The goal was to eavesdrop on the dream, essentially—as though Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation were to meet Christopher Nolan's Inception. Mac Miller Released An Instrumental Mixtape.

The 101 Best Songs of 2015. The Hills were alive with the sound of music in 2015, a period dominated by pop monoliths — the year started with Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars threatening the all-time record for weeks spent at No. 1, peaked with Drake and Future super-teaming at the same time that Ryan Adams ensured that Taylor Swift’s 1989 got its full 12 months in the news cycle, and ended with Adele serving as the music industry’s one-woman Black Friday.

But as usual, SPIN found just as much joy in the spaces between, whether it be an Oscar-nominated child star trying her hand at Top 40, a series of gifted singer-songwriters exhuming the spirit of ’90s post-grunge for Buzz Bin-worthy alt jams, or an unnaturally ebullient rapper emerging out of nowhere — well, Paterson, New Jersey — to become the people’s champ (and unavoidable voice) of hip-hop radio. 101. This is how we listen: Take 12 months, a few thousand albums and pan for gold.

We sift for works that are definitive and for sounds or songs that cross boundaries, make connections, teach us something new. We allow ourselves to be swept away, to be seduced, to be fooled by a good new trick or an old one produced with grace and confidence. 2015 was a year in which the fractures in the music industry's bedrock became everyday geography — a no man's land of streaming, downloads, CDs and LPs, with plenty of skirmishes and territory disputes. It was also one in which sales records were not just broken but demolished. Despite all that, it was still just as easy to find great albums and just as hard to narrow them down to 50. This list of our favorite albums of the year (published alphabetically) includes hip-hop that reckons with our incandescent political moment and the foundational ideas that shaped our nation.

Listen to Bing Crosby's original take: Watch Mac DeMarco on an episode of Pitchfork.tv's "Over/Under": 6 artistes pour comprendre le(s) rap(s) français.

In 2015, more trans murders were reported than in any other year on record, leading the Southern Poverty Law Center to deem it a national crisis. “Trans women of color… are facing a literal genocide in the U.S. right now,” G.L.O.S.S. guitarist Jake Bison told Maximum Rocknroll.

When Sadie shouts, “You want the pepper spray first, or the pocket knife?” Her threat is not just symbolic. The precedent for trans perspectives in punk reaches back to its dawn. Thirty years ago, pioneering trans punk Jayne County sang, “I am what I am, I don’t give a damn” on her song “Man Enough to Be a Woman”. G.L.O.S.S. have also made a fan of Against Me!’ A testament to this reclamation, G.L.O.S.S. fight to make room for non-bros at their shows. The 10 best pieces of Christmas classical music. The BBC music supremo in the 1940s, Victor Hely-Hutchinson made a point of never buying a car, and sticking to his bicycle. Which might make him seem like Scrooge, but there’s nothing Scrooge-like about his music. He had a passion for nursery rhymes and childrens’ poems, and often set them to music. His best known piece is his Carol Symphony, which gained a whole new generation of fans in the Eighties when it was used as the title theme for a BBC adaptation of John Masefield's The Box of Delights.

The first movement of the symphony kicks off in a jolly but not especially Christmassy way. Franz Liszt seems the last person who would write charming Christmas music. What could be more appropriate for a child’s Christmas than a magic kingdom of sweets and presents? Why another piece from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio? For an evocation of a nostalgic English Christmas, this piece can’t be beaten.

French composer Francis Poulenc was far from saintly. The Best Experimental Albums of 2015. As American psychedelic music goes, Tom Carter is a modern titan. From his pensive folk manipulations with Charalambides to his noise sprees with Mudsuckers, and from his jams with Bardo Pond and Badgerlore to his own albums of individual ascendance, Carter has long shown the transcendence of exploration, of taking a familiar form farther than one assumed possible.

Given his résumé, then, it’s surprising that Carter has never clocked into a studio by himself and clocked out with a proper solo guitar album. He must have been waiting to make a masterpiece: Long Time Underground, his seven-song cycle through riffs that rise into unexpected shapes and take on unforeseen timbres, is a remarkable display of just how far six strings can go with no overdubs and one take. "Carvedilol Cowboy" starts as a somber instrumental strummer but ends as an acid-wrenched stunner.
