A wedding photographer by day, he's used to capturing some of the most important moments in a couple's lives. As a longtime fan of Jason's photos on Flickr however, I think the real magic happens when he turns the camera onto his daughters. Sure, his children are adorably cute in their own right, but that's not what makes his photos so interesting.
It's when he puts his own spin on their everyday moments that we not only get to experience our own childhood again, we're able to see a father's pride shine through. Today and tomorrow I want to talk about taking Portraits that are a little out of the box. You see it’s all very well and good to have a portrait that follows all the rules – but it hit me as I was surfing on Flickr today that often the most striking portraits are those that break all the rules. I want to look at some ways to break out of the mold and take striking portraits by breaking (or at least bending) the rules and adding a little randomness into your portrait photography. I’ll share ten of these tips today and a further ten tomorrow (update: you can see the 2nd part here). 1. Most portraits are taken with the camera at (or around) the eye level of the subject. However I decided to put this on article, since on this article I will discuss how to take pictures of dance performance and focuses on the dancer's effect. I admit the first time I took their picture is just for testing my camera + lenses low light performance. However, since I find the camera + lens can capture the swift dancers, then I decided to take something artistic and end ups at hundreds plus pictures of dancers. You'll see why do I took so many picture after you see the pictures below.
Without flash Dance performance without flash means available light shooting, which requires a fast lens. I use my trusty Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lens, with ISO ranging from 800 to 1600. Please note the dancer is jumping, and the face is quite sharp. This picture was taken that at f/2.8, ISO 800, 1/125 seconds yield normal exposure.
