Produced By Presented By. Threat to life on Arctic frontline. 21 April 2013Last updated at 03:34 ET A changing climate and developing industry threaten traditional lifestyles As the days lengthen with the approach of spring, the northernmost reaches of Scandinavia are about to witness the annual migration of huge herds of reindeer.

Threat to life on Arctic frontline

After spending the winter inland in Finnmark, Europe's last great wilderness, the animals are moved to pastures near the coast for the summer. The reindeer play a central role in the livelihoods and culture of the indigenous people of the region, the Sami, but this way of life is under pressure, as I saw on a journey in northern Norway earlier this month. Look at a map of the region and you'll see very few roads and only a handful of towns. Led by our guide, Tom Frode Johansen, we passed through valleys and over hills, along the border between Norway and Finland, and then across frozen lakes and uplands of unblemished white.

And one night we saw how central the reindeer are to the lives of the Sami people. Empty landscape. Slideshow - Top 10 highlights of San Francisco. Spontaneity is the only law obeyed without question in San Francisco.

No one can commit to a date next week, but everyone suddenly shows up when there is a war that needs protesting or someone is handing out free cupcakes at same-sex weddings in City Hall. San Francisco’s breakneck speed is not for the weak of heart, but as anyone who has clung onto the side of a cable car knows, this town offers one crazy ride. You may have heard that San Francisco has a wild streak a mile wide, but it also happens to be 4.5 miles long. Golden Gate Park lets San Franciscans do what comes naturally: roller-discoing, drum circling, petting starfish, sniffing orchids and racing bison toward the Pacific. It is hard to believe these 1,017 acres of lush terrain were once just scrubby sand dunes and that locals have successfully preserved this stretch of green since 1866, ousting casinos and a theme-park igloo village.

In November 1971, the newly created Environmental Protection Agency announced a massive photo documentary project, called DOCUMERICA, to record the adverse effects of modern life on the environment. More than 100 photographers were hired not only to document specific issues, but to capture images showing how we interacted with the environment.

By 1974, more than 80,000 photographs had been produced. The National Archives recently made 15,000 of these images available, and I've spent much of the past week combing through those to bring you these 46 glimpses of America in the early 1970s, with an eye toward our then-ailing environment.
