Kew Gardens is a magnificent place to visit at any time of year as the outdoor gardens transform magically throughout the seasons. But plants from other climatic zones are also on year-round display in the temperature-controlled glasshouses; and Kew is home to the oldest known collection of living orchids. There are two specialised orchid zones in the Princess of Wales Conservatory. Orchids are entrancingly beautiful flowers – vibrant and sensuous.

Wonderful Weeds!

Wonderful Weeds! Weeds are a common enemy to many gardeners – and despite brutal attempts to eradicate them, somehow they manage to survive…. They positively flourish in dry corners, brickwork and crevices. They regularly invade beds designated for pretty flowers; and they even seem perfectly adapted for any climate or weather fluctuation. Their ingenious seed dispersal techniques ensure their survival – no matter what our objections may be. http://www.baldhiker.com/2012/04/08/wonderful-weeds/
There’s nothing like local knowledge when it comes to sniffing out the highlights of a new destination. For those unfamiliar with Britain and its neighbouring regions, the huge array of guidebooks and websites can seem a little daunting. What’s needed is some friendly local advice on the very best holiday spots around Britain.

Baku - The Land Of Fire And Silk

Baku – The Land Of Fire And Silk Azerbaijan ‘Land of Fire’ – why is it called so? Well, we didn’t have to go far from the bustle of Baku to see why. A place called Yanar Dag – The Mountain of Fire.
The sun came out and it was time to venture out of the City, but within only 30 minutes you reach Gobustan - A UNESCO World Heritage Site. An unbelievable treasure trove of ancient rock carvings and natural wonder. Situated in the hills overlooking The Caspian Sea, the rocks tell a story of ancient man in astoundingly preserved detail. Just on the one hill even today there have been found over 6000 carvings dating from 5000 - 40,000 BC. Combine that with all the tools, weaponry and bones (many of which are shown in the fantastic hi tech new museum there) and you have history telling its tale before you. And way way back too!

http://www.baldhiker.com/2012/02/21/bangkok-breakdown-one-wild-night/ For the first time visitor, Bangkok can be something a sensory overload. With its glittering array of exotic sights, sounds, smells and tastes set to a hectic pace that rivals London, LA or new York, there’s nowhere quite like it. To a 19-year-old at the very start of his solo gap year travels, Bangkok can seem more than a little daunting. However, that’s exactly the situation I found myself in one balmy night in June 2005 and I was resolved to dive right in. Within a matter of hours, I’d fallen in love with Bangkok and it remains my favourite city to this day. Having seen the capital grow in sophistication as well as size in the last 7 years I think it’s safe to say that Bangkok really does have something wonderful to offer travellers of every stripe.
