I grew up in a small town, and I always knew from the time I was a little girl that I was destined for a big city. The moment I was old enough to relocate, I did. To me, one of the most beautiful aspects of living in a large metropolitan area is standing right in the middle of all the crowds and craziness at night on the street and looking straight up. The lights, the skyscrapers, the stars and moon all mixed up together look like heaven to me. Today I’d like to feature some more city photography .
In case you are unfamiliar with that city, it is broken up into 5 boroughs, which are each about the size of an ordinary city. Profitis Ilias Church – Ayia Napa As well as walking throughout Cyprus this last week it was wonderful to get a taste of the local life, history and buildings in and between. Away from the resorts and beaches, up in the mountains or out in the countryside you can get a real sense of the real Cyprus. Throughout the days we had wandered from the far West of the island to the East. Traditional mountainside villages, whole villages dating back centuries kept as they were and ancient churches/monasteries line the route.
Before I show you some more fantastic hiking trails and nature in the next posts I just want to show you some of these insights. Paphos was the starting point in the West. Staying near Paphos at Pegaias you can find perfect sea views, buildings along the coast stand alone with super views for example at the church of Agios Georgios overlooking the rocky harbour.
Religious buildings play a large part in the islands culture, history and architectural decoration. Sapphire Seas of Cyprus – Strolling The Coast of Ayia Napa. Over to the East of Cyprus sits the resort of Ayia Napa. To many known as a place of party but as soon as you get out of the centre a whole new paradise opens up. Sandy beaches, rocky outcrops with blue water and sky as far as the eye can see. For gentle calming walks there are few better places. Or for the avid hiker this gorgeous stretch of coast keeps on going with its beauty. The views are endless and I can assure you that you won’t be rushed as much is too good to ignore. At the cliff bottoms you can find hidden sandy beaches or caves you can sit in and watch the clear waters lap up on the rocks. In upcoming posts I will be showing some of the wonderful hiking trails of the Cyprus mountains but I am so glad I wandered the treasures of this coast.

What a wonderful start to a trip to Cyprus, Day one it was boots on and off over to the far West of the island, the Akamas Peninsula, for the Aphrodite (the Greek goddess of love) Nature Trail. This whole area of Cyprus has a very strong connection with the legend of Aphrodite, the daughter of Zeus, and her lover Adonis.
Today a circular trail takes you round the North coast of the penninsular, up over the sea facing hills and down through the trees and tracks. All the while you are surrounded by sun, sea, flowers of such variety plus trees in rich green. Rich smells of shrubs and thyme for example line the path and the will to stop and take in the hit on the senses cannot be ignored I can tell you. Lizards scurrying around, poppies sat in groups, oaks over 600 years old, there was no denying this really was a nature trail. In fact I now need to go brush upon my flowers it seems. Orchids at Kew Gardens. Kew Gardens is a magnificent place to visit at any time of year as the outdoor gardens transform magically throughout the seasons. But plants from other climatic zones are also on year-round display in the temperature-controlled glasshouses; and Kew is home to the oldest known collection of living orchids. There are two specialised orchid zones in the Princess of Wales Conservatory. Orchids are entrancingly beautiful flowers – vibrant and sensuous. Some are tiny with intricate petals; others are large, pitcher-shaped and flamboyant. There are 25,000 named species of orchids; and whilst they may conjure up images of an exotic paradise, orchids actually live in a wide range of climates, from the sub-Arctic to the Tropics.
With their intoxicatingly colourful designs, insects are drawn towards them and many orchids have complex relationships with their pollinators. They regularly invade beds designated for pretty flowers; and they even seem perfectly adapted for any climate or weather fluctuation. Their ingenious seed dispersal techniques ensure their survival – no matter what our objections may be. But whilst weeds may seem like a horticultural enemy; they are in fact the opposite for wildlife. Weeds provide shelter and nourishment, especially for the mini-beasts, which in turn benefit the birds and small mammals who feed on them. Different types of weed come into flower at different times of year, and due to their fast growing nature, they are often the first to provide food for insects after the winter thaw.
