Quilt Block: Scrappy Appliqued House. The traditional Schoolhouse block is one of my all-time favorites.
I've made many pieced house blocks but the idea occurred to me that this humble quilt block could be easily be appliqued. Struck by inspiration, out came my containers of fabric scraps to puzzle over which fabrics to use in my scrappy, appliqued blocks. Reducing the pattern to a 6 inch size, I decided nine blocks would make a nice small quilt to hang in my sewing room. I glue basted (my tutorial here) the house pieces on a 6.5" background square, then sewed them down using the applique stitch on my machine.
A lightweight tear-away stabilizer was used behind the block to prevent fabric puckers while sewing. After putting the blocks together, the little quilt needed "something". There are so many things to look for in a perfect pair of jeans. First, there’s the waist. And then the fit in the legs. And then the fabric stretch. And ah man, now you have to choose from boot cut, skinny jeans, trouser cut, straight leg, blah, blah, blah. I’m tall. I usually have to lengthen our pants. But then my brother came over one day…….and showed me some pants he found. Okay, so I stewed and stewed over how to shorten them…….trying to figure out how to make them look like the original hem. So I looked online. Check out those newly shortened jeans: You can’t even tell that they have been shortened.

It's a project that I think about all the time, but have been to timid/hesitant to try. (I even have a nice little collection of solid knits just for me.) I don't have any problem making patterns up for my daughter. She would look cute in a paper bag. Fitting me is a bit more challenging and I dislike wasting time, effort and fabric on creating something for myself and then it not be flattering. The Made by Rae Spring Top Challenge finally motivated me to get going on a top for myself. Since I couldn't make the Burda top, I decided to bite the bullet and make a pattern for myself. I slightly regret my fabric choice because this fabric tends to pucker along the stripes after washing and I am not much for ironing.
