The features of the vintage style. Let’s continue with our column on webdesign styles; the fourth style we are going to deal with is also my favorite: the vintage.

The features of the vintage style

But what is the vintage style, where does it come from and above all, what are its distinctive traits? Let’s go through them together. Vintage: what does it mean? The term vintage is usually used to indicate objects produced at least twenty years ago, which through time have preserved certain requisites (qualitative, functional or aesthetic) so as to still be able to represent the splendor of an age which “has deeply marked some iconic traits of a particular historical moment of fashion, costums, and design involving and influencing current lifestyles.” (Wikipedia) Today by “vintage style” is thus understood a style of design strongly inspired by retro tendencies of the past (years 1910/1930 in the case of the retro style, 1950/1980 in the case of the vintage style) with regard to the use of certain colors and/or graphic elements.

Modern Art Timeline - Artists, Movements and Styles

The Impressionists searched for a more exact analysis of the effects of color and light in nature. They sought to capture the atmosphere of a particular time of day or the effects of different weather conditions. They often worked outdoors and applied their paint in small brightly colored strokes which meant sacrificing much of the outline and detail of their subject. Among the most important Impressionist painters were Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. Post Impressionism (c.1885-1905) VINCENT VAN GOGH (1853-90) 'Café Terrace at Night', 1888 (oil on canvas) Post Impressionism was not a particular style of painting.

Collage and Texture in Painting: Step by Step guide

When working on a painting, I usually try to include some papers that are particularly relevant to the subject matter. For example, for a painting inspired by a Cornish harbour, I might tear shapes from an appropriate holiday brochure. In other paintings, I sometimes use printed papers from newspapers or magazines to suggest different textures – perhaps the brickwork on the side of a building – although I am very aware that this should be kept within reason, otherwise the painting becomes too busy. In any event, I think contrast is important, so I like to offset the more exciting textural surfaces with plain papers, such as brown wrapping paper, pastel papers or white tissue paper. Creased, transparent, reflective or obviously textured papers will provide other interesting surface qualities to exploit.
